Lily Allen: Why I've got the hots for Boris Johnson

on 28th February 2009
Lily Allen burst on to the music scene in summer 2006 with her hit single Smile and debut album Alright, Still. Currently single, the 23-year-old daughter of actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen lives in Queen's Park, London. Her new album, It's Not Me, It's You, is out now.

Single: Lily Allen is terrified men will only pay her attention because of her fame

Your dad has made some records. Do you write and play much music in your family?

No, not at all. You mean, like, jamming? Ugh! Vile! I can't think of anything worse! Oh God, any kind of interaction on that kind of a level with my family members makes me want to vomit. We just eat together - sometimes. That's about as far as it goes.

You write your own songs - do you ever worry that they reveal too much about you?

Writing songs is very therapeutic because it means I can say what I want to say and just give it to the person it's about, and they can listen to it. Guys are really nice when they're breaking up with me now because they don't want to end up in a song. I suppose I do reveal a lot about myself, but that's because I'm not really very good at communicating with people face to face on an emotional level. I find it all quite difficult. I suppose that's because I was forced into doing quite a lot of therapy after my mum went into rehab for depression. I was ten and I would have to go to group therapy weekends when I was visiting her - I used to hate it so much.

Do you look forward to touring?

I look forward to singing and playing to my audience; I don't look forward to getting up early in the morning and getting on planes and going to places that I don't know much about and not getting to see them but having to sit in a room and eat bread and cheese and ham, which is basically what it is.

What would you call a perfect night in?

Cooking dinner and watching TV, with the dog or a friend. Last week I cooked a huge bit of beef, potato dauphinoise and French beans with Roquefort cheese and walnuts for friends. In the week I cook lots of chicken broths and lots of spicy things and oriental stuff.

What's your dog like?

She's a mongrel. I got her from Battersea Dogs Home just after we moved into a new place in June last year. Now I don't have a boyfriend or anything, my dog makes me feel really safe. She lies on the end of my bed at night and barks. She barks at foxes and squirrels, which is quite annoying, but it makes me feel good because I know if there's a person in the garden then she'll go mad.

Do you have a particular clothes style?

No. I'm always fascinated by friends of mine who read magazines and tear bits out about Kate Moss or Sienna Miller. I've never been that kind of person. I suppose I don't feel so comfortable in my own skin, so I wear things that make me feel comfortable.

Do you spend a lot of money on clothes?

Yes, a fortune. I'm a shoes and handbag girl, and I go through phases because I suddenly start feeling uncomfortable about certain body parts - so I'll get really into three-quarter-length skirts, or I'll start getting paranoid about my upper arms, so I'll get really into jumpers.

Have you changed much since your first album came out?

I think I'm more aware about self-censorship when I'm talking, and also I think I've had to toughen up a bit when hearing negative things about myself, not taking them on board so much. If you were walking down the street and someone said, 'You're really fat and ugly,' you might take that on board, whereas now if somebody writes, 'You’re really fat and ugly,' in a newspaper, I just look at it and go, 'Whatever.' I exist in a world that is really confusing to me, and I try not to be part of it. But when I try to say something honestly, people make me look like an idiot.

Do you enjoy the benefits of being a celebrity?

Of course, it's got me a house and nice clothes. Do you feel guilty about that? No. I'm the one that can't go for a walk in the park without ten old men with long-lens cameras following me.

Which celebrities do you admire?

I'm not generally in awe of people. I'm not that kind of person, and I don't know people well enough to look up to them. People who I look up to are my mum and people who have had to cope with struggles in their lives to provide for their family. My role models are my family and people whose stories I know.

You're single at the moment. Do you think men are scared of you?
There is that. But there's also the fact I'm terrified that someone might stay the night with me and then they'll walk outside afterwards and get on the phone to their mates and say: 'Guess what? I was with Lily Allen last night.'

Anyone in mind?

I quite fancy Boris Johnson, even though he's a Tory. He's very funny and charming.

What do you like watching on television?

I used to really like watching The Apprentice when that was on, and I love The X Factor - I just find the campness of it amazing; the dance routines and the happy, smiley people - it's so funny.

What's your favourite album of all time?

I love What's The Story Morning Glory? (Oasis) a lot. I listened to the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss record loads last year. And I love the new Kings of Leon record.

Who is your best friend?

My mum - we're also the only two people in our family who are single, so we end up spending a lot of time together.

I love her new album. I think I likes Alright, Still better but this is still good I think it might be a little overproduced.

Lily Allen Is Homeward Bound...
mrpaparazzi
Smile singer Lily Allen has been absent from London for a few weeks now so what we really want to know is have you missed her? No?Silly question, course you haven’t, even when she’s on the other side of the world there’s no getting away from her. The pictures keep coming, the stories keep coming and best of all the constant Tweets keep coming. Speaking of which yesterday she excitedly told Tweetsville:
“Whoooooooooop whooooooop, last day of promo today!!!!! Get ready London, I'm coming home.”
Oh we’re ready Lily! We’re ready.
True to her word on Thursday morning we spotted Lily looking happy and healthy as she prepared to board a flight home from Sydney Airport and just before she got on the plane she found time for one last Tweet:
“So, I have had a wonderful time here in Oz, but home is calling and the time has come to bid my antipodean friends farewell, till June lovers
