So first I recommend you get a sewing machine!
And what about sewing lessons, unless you want to teach yourself!
The easiest things to make first are boobtubes and skirts without zips
Thanks! Do you recommend any websites?

When I taught myself to sew many years ago, I bought a bunch of old patterns at yardsales, checked out a bunch of books on sewing from the library, read the books cover to cover, took patterns out of the envelopes, checked that all the parts were there, laid them out to envision how they fit together, then I bought some super-cheap fabric to start testing them out. No good reason to waste nice fabric when you don't really know what you are doing.

My first two garments SUCKED, but I quickly got much better.

This is the fourth dress I ever made, which I made back in 1996, and I still wear it occasionally. It's Very Brady, don't you think? The pattern dates to 1973.

The key ingredient to successful sewing is patience. Take your time, read and follow all of the instructions, and if you get stuck, put it up for a while, brainstorm a little, and come back to it when your frustration subsides.

Feel free to ask me any specifics as to what types of patterns are good for beginners, stuff about fitting, or whatever else happens to be confusing or interesting to you. I like to help fellow seamstresses out when I can.

^^^ this thread may help

i must say the first garments i made were terrible!
but as i gained experience it got better the more things i made the easier it became. but it is always handy to have someone to show you the different techniques that go in to making a garment.

plus i still kind of suck at putting zips in

^^^ zips, same!
i have only been sewing for a year. and i refuse to use patterns! i make an item in about 1 hour! they used to be pretty wack, but now they are pretty wearable. i don't have the patience to be a great sewer!

i would recommend getting advice though, but mostly practice

very nice urd, if I saw that in the store I would start looking for the price tag !!

I still haven't made the skirt I was talking about, starting with it this weekend. But I made this top, keep in mind it's the first thing I've ever done so it's pretty badly done. The thing around the neck doesn't go along the body but sticks out and so on..
