That's probably a good idea.

^My colored hair magically re-appeared I don't know how that's possible since I used permanent black dye over semi-permanent purple dye but the purple's back, lol. I actually love the way the black has only faded towards my hair ends, it almost has a bit of an ombré look now, going from pitch black to a pale wine-red. And it's only a small part I will have to bleach to get the tipped look. I'll use Crazy Color's Pine Green because I've had reddish and purple tones for so long and I need a change.

Okay, this thread hasn't been active for a while.. but I'm wondering what you guys think of trying this look temporary with colored hairspray? I haven't seen colored hair spray since I was 10, but I remember me and my friends would spray highlights in our hair before school parties .

Someone on the Pastel Hair Thread just recently posted pics of them doing it with a spray in, it looks really good!

^ That looks really cool. Is it better to bleach the tips first before dying? My hair is a light brownish colour and I'm wanting to go pink/purple just for the new year break.

^The color will be much more true and intense if it's bleached first, and after the color washes out, it's a pretty ombre effect. Did this back in the beginning of the year and miss it so much. The bleach made the ends of my hair really gross after a few weeks, though. I planned on getting a haircut after I did it anyway, so it didn't bother me.

Also, I did it based on this Free People tutorial and their system worked really well:

This is something that I really really really want to do! I have black hair, and have no idea what colour to do my tips? I thought about red,but seeing style stars photo I think my heart is now set on purple. Also my hair is quite long, how much of the hair should I get dipped? 2-3 inches? I have no idea.

Dumbfairy, I am going through the exact same thing! My hair isn't color treated at all (I've only gotten highlights once, it was 10 years ago, and i went the cheap route and they fried my hair). I went in to get my haircut yesterday, and consulted with my stylist and a color specialist. Initially, I was deadset on a photo from the first post on this board:

However, because of how dark my hair is, the stylist warned she would have to lift it to nearly white to get that color. it would completely destroy the ends...which isn't the worst thing, I suppose, because I can just cut off the last few inches a couple of months from now. HOWEVER. I was also warned that they can only guarantee these kinds of colors for 1 week, *maximum* being 4 weeks. And when this color (well, blues in general) tend to fade, they will fade to a greenish color and that just isn't cute. Both girls suggested I do purple, because it will only require lifting to a golden color, which is a lot less damage. Plus purple tends to get better with time, but when it fades out, it will need to be re-touched. So the coloring specialist did recommend doing large highlights in the under layer of my hair, so they'll just kind of subtly show. I'm torn. Given my job, and for the sake of maintenance and whatnot, the purple is the wiser choice. But I'm just so enamored with that steel blue dip dye...*le sigh*.

Just for an update, my hair is now pink at the ends and I love it. The bleach didn't take to my hair completely, but I think it gives a more natural looking result (not that pink will ever look natural...)

I still love this! I saw a girl in London last weekend who had her hair coloured in the exact colours of her coat, it was so gorgeous. Wish I took a picture...
