Fashion & Veganism
Hi there!

Veganism has become fashionable in recent years - it's almost a bit of cliché now. However, I guess many followers of this trend have been rather concerned with a healthy diet and were not really driven by ethical motivations. Or do you think there is also growing interest in vegan fashion, i.e. replacing leather, wool, silk etc. with good quality materials not of animal origin? What are your thoughts?

***Edited*** Please post this survey in Careers & Education. Thanks!

HI KatJcq and welcome to the Fashion Spot.

This is certainly a place to discuss this topic but please post the survey link in the thread "Help me with my Homework" in the Careers and Education forum.

It's true that over the years we see increasing amounts of synthetic fabrics and materials being used, but I think it's for other reasons ... not veganism. First, it's often cheaper so mass producers will find ways to use synthetics. Secondly, many synthetics are now blended with natural materials and sometimes the fabrics are even better as a blend ... synthetics can add stretch, colorfastness, durability and reduce wrinkling.

I think that there is only a tiny faction of people who are concerned about using animal products in fashion and although they are pretty vocal, I do not see it as a growing trend at all.

I found this very interesting

Leather is always going to be superior to whatever artificial material they create to simulate it, so just make leather in labs instead of killing for it. Really hoping this becomes a thing asap. Lab meat will most likely be a thing too, eventually.

You'd be surprised with some synthetics! Leather has a couple of disadvantages, like how long it lasts, and that it can get dry and crackle.

^ Are you saying that it's a problem that leather lasts a long time? It can get dry and crackle, but it's usually decades before that happens--and proper care can help. People are still using Deco leather club chairs with the original leather, and it is typically heavily 'patinated,' but you still see them that are usable ... and those chairs are getting close to 90 years old.

Some mid-century leather chairs still look pretty great. Our skin should look as good

'Naugahyde' and the like are not nearly as long-lived.

I really respect the concerns vegans have, but leather as a material is pretty hard to beat, IMO.
