The public's attention span is too short to allow a model to flourish beyond a few seasons. People on TFS are already whining that someone like Arizona Muse is "everywhere" and they're "tired" of her. At the height of their fame you couldn't escape Cindy/Christy/Linda/Kate but now people get really upset when a model becomes popular. It's like the need for fresh faces is insatiable.
The quick turnover also isn't helped by all the lookalike models. How many models could you mistake for Kasia Struss or Freja at the moment? The Elite model search contest supposedly scours the globe for beauties and every year turns up with the same nondescript White European faces that you can't tell from the current or previous crop of girls? The majority of the world's consumers are non-white. When will the industry tastes reflect this?

Yep, majority of world's consumers is not white.... But are these non-white consumers also main consumers of luxury fashion goods?
The world's countries with the highest demographic growth are mostly from Northern Africa, Western Asia, India, China.... developing countries without lucrative markets for fashion luxury goods. China is changing rapidly in terms of consumer behaviour for luxury goods but so the number of Asian models in advertisement campaigns and magazines is. Nothern America, Europe and some of the Asian states (China, maybe some of the Arabic petrostates , Japan) are the target groups of these high fashion houses cause this is the place to generate the highest revenue... So the biggest part of the luxury fashion target group is white at the moment.
Disappointed in Vogue Italia and Steven Meisel this month for once again putting a bunch of random, unknown models on the cover who will most likely be disposed of by a year from now.
^That is an excellent example of this phenomenon. The photo doesn't even sell those models to the public. They are more of a young, hip, anonymous group of people. Pretty disinteresting in general.
I guess a lot of the blame lies with the modeling agencies that start looking for a back-up copy of a model who has recently made a name for herself by her looks and personality. But obviously they do it because it works....
