"The tension latent in this 18-year-old’s name has certainly blessed a young career that began in earnest with an Alexander Wang menswear launch lookbook shoot on his very first day as a model. Jon Paul’s second booking duly followed with VMAN’s Tom Van Dorpe, which the striking 6′1 1/2″ (187 cm) blond met with all the panache expected of a stadium rock performance before 85,000 screaming fans. Jon Paul’s cred isn’t limited to pop music—though being ranked Florida’s #1 bassist for his age bracket certainly doesn’t hurt—as he was brought to the attention of Ford Men by none other than Ford’s Rachel Clark . That Jon Paul is also the VMAN model of the week lends further credence to the possibility that he is truly set to shake the temples of fashion." - VMAN
En route from West Palm Beach to Los Angeles to play music with friends and see the world, 18-year-old Jon Paul was unexpectedly whisked away to New York by Ford Models instead. They had seen some photos of him and wanted to meet him immediately. Not even two hours after his arrival he nailed the first casting he went to: Alexander Wang’s resort look book. Not a bad start for a kid from Florida with three first names! I met him at my office for a quick interview.
NATALIE JOOS How long have you been in New York now? JONATHAN PAUL A little under two weeks.
NJ How did you end up here? JP I was planning to come to New York before I moved to L.A. I was going to stay with my friend Rachel Clark. She asked me to send some photos over so maybe I could make some money to cover my trip. When Ford saw the pictures they wanted me in town as soon as possible. I went straight to the Wang casting and got booked within a half hour!
NJ Did you ever think of modeling? JP No I never thought about it. Even though some people had told me I had potential.
NJ What were you going to do in L.A.? JP I am a musician. I play bass. I was looking for change, I wanted to get out of Florida and see the word. And I didn’t have any real college plans. I was just going to spend some time in L.A. playing music with friends.
NJ What kind of music do you play? JP I play mostly top 40 pop music but I was jazz trained. I have a YouTube channel.
NJ Had you ever been to New York before? JP I came once, about 6 months ago, when we were on tour. I didn’t get to see much. Now I am really enjoying it. I love the parks and rooftops.
NJ Are you interested in fashion? JP I’m pretty clueless. I have only shopped at two stores here. My favorites are Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. I buy a lot of native American stuff. Supposedly my grandmother is Native American, which makes me a quarter. I love the culture and artifacts, I think it’s really beautiful. Check my shoes!
