Bible Baptist graduate is fashioning a career in New York
Name: Marshall Showalter
Achievement: Marshall, who moved to New York in June of last year, was named the winner of the 2011 Perry Ellis Most Wanted Model Contest this month. The competition was determined by votes on Facebook.
Education: He's a 2010 graduate of Bible Baptist School, and he's attended Borough of Manhattan Community College.
Family: Father, Randy Showalter; sisters, Sarah Showalter, Jennifer Britt and Amelia West; brothers, Calvin and Jason Guest, Mike and Patrick West.
Walk this way: As the winner of the contest, Marshall walked on the runway as part of the Perry Ellis Fall 2011 show at the Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week. "It was an awesome experience," Marshall said. "I couldn't be more blessed."
Immediate recognition: The images taken of Marshall and the other models "go around the world because Perry Ellis is such a big brand," said Brenner Thomas, an account executive with LaForce + Stevens, a New York marketing agency.
Immediate plans: Marshall said that he's taking a semester off from Borough of Manhattan Community College to "see what I can make of modeling." If he continues to have success, he then plans to take another semester off.
What he misses most about Savannah: Sweet tea, chicken and dumplings and "the weather."
Hobbies: Traveling, camping, fishing, and spending time with his friends and family.
Favorite television shows: Mainly education channels, particularly National Geographic, Discovery Channel and History Channel
Favorite musicians: Coldplay, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Immortal Technique, Permission To Launch and Sound Tribe Sector 9
Favorite author: George Friedman "is my favorite right now."
Favorite sports: Football, "because I love the contact," and soccer, "because of the fast pace, it never stops."
Most influential person: Marshall said that would be Brian West, whom he considers to be a second father. "He always approached me in hard times, with a business approach, and told me nothing in life is free."
