I guess, but someone said that mods should terminate any memberships that havent been activated in longer than a few months which I think is a really good idea.
And to be honest I dont have a problem with people who will only join to post in one or two threads, theres nothing wrong with that.

I just went to C4D cafe and they had this notice at the top:

"All new members have their first few posts moderated. This means that a new post or reply won't immediately show up until approved by a moderator."

If this was combined with only opening registrations a few times a month, it would help establish a pattern for members to integrate themselves into the forum I think...

Well still think no.
But if then i would say that.. If someone hasn't post about like 200 post in a months ( i am just saying some number ) then it most me deleted. How many members are here but never post?

Yeah, but they're not the ones getting invite privileges, innit...

I think yes every quarter for about a week. Anyone who read sthis site regularly enough and wants to be a member would be aware that this is happening and would have the opportunity to join. I read on a daily basis and was lucky enough to get an invite this week, otherwise I would have kept an eye on for when the registrations would re-open.

It should still be private but easier to invite.

Perhaps one invite per 200 posts or something.

That doesn't have anything to do with the day to day functioning of the board though, it might just mean that a new member can't get the username he/she wants.

haha then I would be out of the game. anyway quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality.

I think open registration for 1 month or so twice a year would be best. so that people who already want to join for some time would have the chance, but it would still limit all the known downsides of open registration.

I voted no because things seem to be working as is. In my opinion, with there being an invite-only policy in place, it almost makes it a little more personal in the sense that you know who is coming in as they did have to get an invite from someone in good standing with this board. I agree with whoever said about an application process. Perhaps maybe even running different open registrations for different groups. For example, have an open registration for those that work in the industry one month for one week and they would have to register with some type of company email address (those with Hotmail/Yahoo/Gmail/ecc cannot register during this time). Then maybe two months later, have a full open registration for non-industry professionals where only about 300 members can register. It could be done tri annually. It may sound complicated as I am sometimes not the best in explaining things, but I think it could work.
