I voted no. I've been a part of many forums but this is the first that I've stuck with for more than a year. TFS is the first large forum that I've been on where lots of people are genuinely helpful, kind and knowledgeable. If tfs opens to the public I think it may become like pretty much every other forum out there where everyones just asking for help but no ones willing to help in return. It may also need stricter rules to manage all the members and tfs is already the strictest forum I've ever seen. I do think however that the invitation process should be simpler, like everyone getting an invite every 500 posts or so.

So, in the registrations page it could read that there are two ways to get a membership: 1) By asking an existing member for an invite, or 2) by sending an email to a mod and explaining why you want to join.

From the outside it would look like an application process and scare away non-serious people. Whereas in reality it would only require the mods a couple of clicks to send them a reply with the invite.
As a mod team leader ... I do know how much work reviewing applications would be. We'd be so busy with that, we wouldn't be effective in moderating the forums and things would start to get out of control, I'm sure.

Nyx ... I like your idea the best, so far, because it doesn't create a lot of work. As you pointed out, it should slow down spammers and people who just want to pop in once to make a comment then leave. And existing members can all have invites, automatically. Have no idea if our boss Andy is looking for a half way solution or not but I hope he considers this as a nice compromise. I'm going to point it out to him, in case he misses it.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Keep it coming.

I like the idea of linking karma to invites. Registration is a separate issue, I think. The person who invited me asked for a few invites and she received five pretty quickly.

Perhaps we could open registration to paying members for a selected period of time. If people paid $20, they would be likely to remember that they belong to this wonderful community.

Oops, I had better become a paid member right away!

maybe there should be a questionnaire...but then again some people may be joining to use only one aspect of TFS like "art of noise"

I don't think linking karma and invites would work. I don;t know if anyone remembers this, but I once wrote something like "I think you should give me karma points...Why? The better question is why not?" Anyways, I ended getting alot of points for that, simply because people thought it was funny. I'm not saying that where the majority of my points have come from. I've contributed alot of pictures and comments to threads that I've been given points for, I just mean that anyone could give it to anyone and it doesn't really say much about why you should be given invitation privileges.

I guess I'm being a bit snooty too because I'm not in the industry and I did register when registrations were open...

I think it would be a good idea for every mod to put the link to this poll in their signature. I guess not many people know about it - and for better or worse, everyone should be able to voice their opinion on the development of tFS.

I voted yes I do believe that there are a lot of people out there who can and want to make a contribution to this community. We should embrace that...

^err , I take pride on the fact that I haven't modified my signature since december 2004.. and I don't wanna do it.
but I guess.. if bette or softgrey or any of the team leaders agree, I'll have to go with the flow.

I think the registrations should be open again, but in revenge, nothing to be visible as a guest.
Also I'd delete everyone who doesn't post for more than 2 months (or sth similar)

Edit: after reading some of the other replies I'd change my vote. You guys are right, the community here is nice without being open for everyone. (well, I signed in when it was still open, lucky me ) And a new system with the invites would be alright to me.
