I was told to link to the source of an image I posted. Is it ok to directly link the image to my flickr page if I took the photo myself?

Welcome, Jack. If this is a crediting issue, you can simply post in the thread that it is your own photo. Supply the post number of the post in question when you do, since you will be unable to edit your post if it is more than 10 minutes old.

I never knew that the yellow button is the way to post pictures, but what is the point?Why post through there when you can directly post an image by pasting the code from the imagehost in the reply?Does it save on TFS bandwith that way?

It doesn't have any effect on the bandwidth, it's just another way to post an image (and not everyone uses an image host that provides codes, or knows how to format them).
