Virus/Trojan Alerts!! ImageHost, Radikal.ru
It has come to our attention that pictures hosted on imagehost.org are probably infected with a virus or a trojan.

In fact, imagehost.org knows about this for a few weeks now, but has not done anything to stop it. See the announcement at the bottom of thier home page. http://imagehost.org/ Although they say it's not them ... it is still impacting images hosted on their site.

Many of our Anti Virus programs are being triggered when we attempt to click on the images to see them full size. Some programs are just blocking the member from accessing the images at all. But we are very concerned for those members who have not taken appropriate steps to protect their computers.

What you need to do:

1. If you are using imagehost.org as your image hosting site, please consider switching to another image hosting service. (do not use ImageVenue, ImageBam, or ImageHaven ... they are not allowed on tFS).

2. Make sure you have an updated version of a good anti-virus program.

3. If you do not have good anti-virus protection, check the properties of any image to see to where it is hosted. Do not click on any images hosted on imagehost.org until further notice.

What does this virus or trojan do? Because I've twice mistakenly clicked on links to imagehost.org. Each time, I managed to close the tab/window before the pictures finished loading. My anti-virus program has long since expired but my adblocking and spyware programs are pretty good. So far, nothing hinky has happened yet. What signs should I look for, in case my computer has been infected?

We don't know ... most of us caught it before we got infected (good anti virus and anti spyware software alerted us).

It's very likely spyware ... which can grab hold of you home page or direct you to pages you really are not wanting to go to. But it could be a lot more malicious than that.

But one moderator has a systems problem with her computer where she can barely browse and has trouble seeing images (hosted anywhere) ... it's in the shop right now and they said it was a trojan. So ... we suspect she might have picked it up via ImageHost ... but we don't know for sure. You can pick something up like this anywhere .....

I suggest that you get new or updated virus protection and do a full computer scan, just to make sure you are OK.

True ... unless you consider unsolicited popup ads for porn and links that change later to direct you to a hardcore porn site a "virus" ... many people do.

If your computer was infected, you'd know it. When mine was, I couldn't surf the web, and my computer was overridden with ads and pop-ups. I had to buy a new one, as it deteriorated to the point where it wouldn't even let me log-in.

Ever since I've had an anti-malware device installed into my laptop, some of the pictures on the threads can't be shown. It shows a broken link icon instead. Could that be related to the virus/Imagehost ordeal & my computer is blocking them out of safety?

Seeing as how some members continue hosting images on ImageHost, would it be okay if members repost the same images on threads but using safe hosting sites? Or would those reposts be deleted by moderators?

This is a good question! If the moderator(s) don't see the imagehost-hosted ones, due to anti-malware measures, they would not know it is a repost, and would not delete - unless another member reported it as a repost and the repost was verified.

If they could see the original (imagehost) version, the second post likely would be deleted as a repost.

There is also the possiblity that the original imagehost version could be removed instead; however, this might anger the original poster if they care about their post count going down or not getting credit for posting the image first.

No easy answers!

Yep, and the reason I ask is because of that third rule: "Do not click on any images hosted on imagehost.org until further notice."

Well, what if members want to view the images but don't want to risk their computers being infected? I'd have no problem reposting them, but if we're not allowed to simply because they've been posted already, then that rule doesn't make sense.

Either delete the post hosting images at ImageHost or allow someone else to repost them.

It's not a rule ... it's just a warning. You may click on them if you wish and hope that your anti virus protection disables the problem before it does any damage to your computer.

Here's an idea:

You may ask the member to host them elsewhere and repost them because you don't want to encounter the virus on ImageHost. Tell them that they can report their original post and tell us to delete it, since they reposted from another hosting site. Refer them to this thread or the one in the Announcements forum. That way, they still get credit and you can see the pics. And they will probably quit using ImageHost, once they realize that it creating a problem for other members.

Probably ... you can check them to see if they are hosted on ImageHost, by checking their properties ... right click on the X then click on properties to see the URL. I'm not sure how you do it on a MAC.

Yesterday a Trojan virus attacked my laptop bad. I don't know if I got it from viewing pictures here on TFS, but it was a serious virus. I had to call the Microsoft anti-virus dept, and they were extremely nice and helpful. They took the virus out along with the infected files. The lady asked me, what site did I visit before everything occurred and I told her, TFS. She just did a report on the site.

My boyfriend and I had to cancel our creditcards because we had used them on my laptop and all personal info was being shared by third parties.

I am very sorry to hear this. Thank you for sharing the information about Microsoft ... didn't know that they would help like this.
( I hope that you will advise the Microsoft people that it was probably picked up on imagehost.org after clicking on an image here and being redirected to their site ... )

We had that happen to one of our mods, too who had to take her computer in to get it fixed.

That is when we made an announcement in the Announcement Forum. We hope that every member keeps an eye on that forum, because it's always information that is important to all members.

It is not coming from tFS ... I hope everyone understands this. It's when you click on the images that are hosted on imagehost.org.... you leave our site and go to theirs in a new window and that is where you pick up the virus. The virus is coming from imagehost.org.
