Viruses Attached to Pictures
Hopefully I'm not doing a repost (I did a search on viruses in this forum and didn't have any results related to this question):

I've had a problem with my computer getting infected by viruses that seem to be attached to pictures people post here (specifically the Kristen Stewart thread where I've spent much of my time). I click on pictures posted that open up into a seperate screen that does show the picture but sometimes there are funky adds included (i.e. stare at this ad for three seconds while we load your picture). And after opening up a couple of these pictures I'd get a warning from my anti-virus software telling me something's wrong and then I find out that my whole computer is screwed and I have to reformat it to get rid of the virus. My hubby is pretty good with a computer and up-to-date on all this computer tech stuff and even the most recent anti-virus programs he found couldn't get rid of the virus in my computer. And I'm pretty sure, after having it happen to me three times (and reformatting my computer three times) that it's these picture attachments. I really really don't want other people to get their computers infected with these viruses so I was hoping there was something the TFS team could do? (maybe block attachments that come from these specific sites, etc.)
I'm pretty scared to open up any attachments posted in the threads which kind of stinks cause I've been a member of TFS for several years and I lllloovvee this forum but my hubby has all but banned me from going to this forum (I told him it's the best fashion forum I could find, I really put up a fight!). Is there anything to be done or should I just refrain from opening up attachments altogether?

imagevenue has infected my computer several times, so now i use the forum's attachment feature to upload any NSFW pictures. unfortunately my account upgrade just expired so i don't think i have as much space for images. imageshack is a safe hosting site but it doesn't allow nudity.

^ I had the same problem few months ago from the same hosting site. I contacted the ADMIN'S here from TFS so they could let every member know about the problem, and they didn't seem to care.

Oooo yeahhhh the viruses can infect your computer without you knowing it. One of the viruses on my comp was one that copies your keystrokes, so say if you do your banking online, it can copy your login and password
I've been in TFS for years and never had a problem until just the past two months or so. I dunno but it's annoying as heck and if I get infected one more time my hubby might block me from going to TFS (which I really don't want!).

This is not something that we can do anything about, unfortunately. It's coming from another site. So, you are correct ... if you think you know where the virus is coming from, don't open those attachemts ... check the properties first, before you open anything.

I don't know too much about this, but perhaps a different anti-virus software might be better at eliminating this virus? Might be worth a try.

ImageBam is a good alternative to ImageVenue (thumbnails & allows NSFW images)

My only worry though is that it'll be one of those sites that shuts down after a few months and we lose all our images

I trust in Photobucket, I'm pretty sure they won't close anytime soon & you can post in tumbnails as well.

Some of those warning messages people get about viruses aren't really a virus, they're just a nuisance web pop-up ad trying to scare people into buying some anti-virus software.

I've run the FireFox browser for a few years because in the past it's been much safer than Internet Explorer, and it stopped almost all pop-up ads, but a few still happen. By now Internet Explorer is probably greatly improved.

I run these programs occasionally to get rid of accumulated suspicious cookies & possible spyware, they've both been around for a long time and have a good reputation:

- Spybot search & destroy
- Ad-aware
Both of them are available in several versions that cost, but if you check their sites they also have a free version for personal use.

^^ I don't like Photobucket. They can, will and have deleted photos that they deem "inappropriate" or NSFW or whatever, even if your album is private. They deleted a whole bunch of fashion and photography photos I had in my private album because of that. I definitely would not put any of my photos on Photobucket.

^Of course, if it's nudity don't put there, so far & I have been using it for like 1 year now, they only deleted me 3 pics because they had nudity, I'm satisfied with the service. all depends what you put there, so if the kind of pics that you usually upload to there are against their rules, it's evident that you are not satisfied w/ photobucket.

^Unfortunately my pictures weren't nudes. So yes I am unsatisfied. When I asked why they deleted they gave me the run around and I moved my photos elsewhere.

I know colormefashion, I also hate this (I believe we even have a thread around here dedicated to this very topic ) but unfortunately there are very few (if any) free image host websites that will allow pictures with nudity in them. When tfsers upload images there, they have to deem them NSFW so they don't get removed and unfortunately "adult" ad's are part of the territory. We're looking into other options though in the meantime
