It looks really good on some people, how good can depend on skin tone, hair color, all the obvious stuff.

I wear my Mac Style Black lippy every single time I go to work. I absolutely love it! I have the Chanel blue black too, and all the black lipglosses. I think it helps that I am extremely pale with bright bright orange hair.

I totally take back my statement about needing certain undertones for it too look good. I tried on Black Knight by MAC and it was fierce... Like everyone else already said, you just need the attitude and confidence to wear it.

But damn, its hot.

My boyfriend says I should give it a go, that I'd look good with black lips (and he isn't a goth or anything! Lol!), but, although I really want to try that new Mac gloss, I'm somehow scared by it. It may be because I dress in black most of the time and I don't want to look like a goth (I had enough of that in my teens, lol!).

The mac gloss is so sheer it's barely worth worrying about. The Cremesheen black is pretty light too. I don't know why you'd feel fear about it, the idea is to wear it with a bare face and a little mascara, no goth wears make it like that, it'll just look cool!

I'm so glad I bought the original YSL black lipgloss. It's incredibly opaque and shines like PVC. Tomorrow I shall wear it with my black mattene from mac. Yes!

Temptalia has a review on black and dark lipsticks from MAC here. I personally think Shu Uemura's black lipstick works the best. My friend bought one for halloween!

i agree with this. i ended up doing black lips for halloween and i thought they looked quite cool. i think the key is to keep everything else sleek to keep the look chic, not costume-y. i have a few events later this week and i plan on doing a low tight chignon, vanilla on my eyes with mascara and the black lip. i am just using chapstick and my black MAC greasepaint because it's too thick to wear on my eyes and i have terrible smuding with it.

if i learned one lesson about black lipstick saturday night it's that q-tips are a godsend! use them to clean up the edges for a really pristine, poised lip.

Not many people can carry black lipstick well.

Only a few people have the certain look of pulling it off well.

The darkest I ever wear is dark purple, chocolate brown, or dark burgundy.

I'd do black lipstick if I find a decent black lipstick and find the right occasion for it.

Gotta say that key to this look IMO is having reasonably big lips. Such a dark colour on thin lips is just going to make them look thinner and it's not too flattering. However if you have a generous mouth and flawless skin, I think you should GO FOR IT!!!

awesome, thanks! just one of those looks that's so good in eds/couture and i'm dying to see how other people pull it off in the real world. i go out a lot and work in music/fashion/etc and know there's situations where it'll socially be ok/not look too extreme/not be a big deal, and just would love to see how other girls rock it too.

If I'm honest I hate putting pictures up because I hate my face, but I shall for the purposes of black lipstick help! Being thirty has made my face so much more chunky...I hate getting older

What do you do? Fashion/music is a great industry if you want to rock the black lipstick trend on a daily basis. I am a dj and there a lot of girls with the black lipstick thing....but none of them have my beloved YSL black gloss. I am so glad I invested in it last year....

technically i work in music/fashion/entertainment PR at a marketing/events company owned my a music/fashion magazine in NYC, and i freelance as a photographer and modelled and dj'd a bit a few years ago. my whole office is tattooed and whatever and i live between williamsburg and the lower east side, so i mean, for crying out loud, if anyone is in a social/work situation where these things don't bat an eyelash, it's me.

i bet the YSL lipgloss solves a lot of my worries -- i've got this great near-black red Mac lipstick as well as one of their black glosses (awkwardly sheer), but they're both just so bleed-y that it's almost impossible to wear. I'm thinking i might get a black liner pencil (or just use my eyeliner?) and then fill it in with the red and blot a bit (a la fantastically obvious rodarte ss10 i guess) which would solve my 'o noez black lips' worries as well as the whole 'now my lips are running like my mascara' problem. hm.
