Hidden / Covering Brows
Question: HOW on Earth do they get rid of the eyebrows like at the Dior couture shows -or even a lot of shows where they want a high arch? Surely some girls have thick eyebrows and concealer itself wont do it?! Wax or something? Kind of like this, though I don't think Lily has that heavy brows. But I am sure some girls do.

no noo!!

it's spirit gum honey! its a long and tiring process of applying spirit gum over your eyebrows, drying them up, and painting on top of them.

I can't check cause its packed up in a box for a pending move....but I could have sworn that in Kevin Aucoin's 'Making Faces' book they did this and said they used wax.

I didn't know what spirit gum was so I googled it. In case anyone else was confused too it's some kind of adhesive I think. They use it for attaching prosthetic facial parts and hair (moustaches, lace wigs, bushy brows, etc.) in stage make up. It looks like pretty serious stuff and they sell special remover for it so i guess it doesn't come off very easily. Also said it irritates some people's skin but it is still commonly used. Sounds scary to me. But I guess this is not something you'd use for everyday anyway so it would probably be ok.

Just curious, why do you want to create such a look? Are you doing a fashion show or something or some kind of event? Or just playing with new makeup techniques? Just 'cause it seems like drastic measures to take...

Oh I might just use wax if I don't have time to do a test patch with the spirit gum. Just for going out! You can get water soluble spirit gum also.

Yeah spirit gum is a big deal if you've never used it before. I hardly use it on myself but my friend drag queens live on that, and its a breeze when you know how to use it and take it off.

Just make sure that aside from the special solution to remove the spirit gum, have some baby oil at hand and some mini towels with hot water to sorta soften up the area for removal

Also you must know that you're risking losing a few brows here and then, because this is a very potent sealant, so if you have very sparse brows and you tend to lose them easily, i'd try using a water based one which is best for children or people with sensitive skn, and you'll only need to use a bit of rubbing alcohol or water.

I put hairspray on an old toothbrush, making sure that the brows didn't stick out (if you know what I mean). It took me a while, but it worked very well. And then some concealer.

Theatre makeup companies like Ben Nye or Kryolan make wax that you mold over your eyebrow, set and then draw eyebrows over. Its pretty common to use this wax if you want those thin 30s/40s eyebrows and a lot of vintage lovers use it. You should be able to get it from a costume/theatre store.

Do makeup artists actually dye the brows for looks like this, or is it some sort of powder applied in order to make them look white? (Photo from the Rachel Clark thread)
