Sports & Energy Drinks
Hello

Can anyone recommend a good sports drink? I've found lately that the morning after I've played sport I have a splitting headache & I feel like I'm going to throw up from dehydration. I drink LOTS of water during and after I exercise and always make sure I eat a good meal before AND after I play but I'm thinking a sports drink might help. I'm looking for something without alot of artificial flavours and colorings.

Syd X

Please don't drink any energy drinks. They are awful for you. They increase your heart dramatically and then make you crash within 2 hours. It's not good for you.

I love Gatorade Rain. It tastes less sugary (to me) than regular Gatorade beacuse it's clear. I love the Lime (green) flavor the best.

^ I was thinking of trying Gatorade but I'm worried about what's in the drinks. I just feel so terrible the day after exercise & water just doesn't seem to cut it.

Let's see...

I've read only some fitness articles in my town's local newpaper. I live in Colorado Springs and we are the location of the United States Olympic Training Center. My Olympians come here to train because of the elevation.

I read that it's best to refuel yourself after a workout with water and some protein within 30-60 minutes after exercise.

Does that help?

Gatorade is best consumed with water. So a chug of Gatorade and a chug of water is the best way to drink it.

If you're feeling bad the day after exercise, I would assume that it's not a consumption issue but instead that you may be working yourself too hard. Is that a possibility?

You know what this means
If you have these sort of pains after exercise
it means you are exercising too hard/long
Better to take it easy
and gradually increase intensity

Gatorade and Vitamin Water. You need electrolytes. papa_levante is right about needing protein after workouts, I myself went down to the olympic center to train. The altitude is hell! For protein drink regular or soy milk also.

" I eat a good meal before AND after I play"...What time periods?

I would suggest seeking medical advice, ASAP.

BTW. I make my own drinks.
Two bananas.
Half pint of semi skimmed milk.
Half pint of fresh water.
Honey.
Multi vitamins.
All in liquidiser.

Variation could be made using your own preferances.

Maybe you need the electrolytes you're losing while exercising? Try Smart Water (normal water that has added electrolytes). It's the most natural solution in my opinion. But I'd also try eating something like a banana after you work out. The potassium is supposed to help your muscles after working out. Are you usually working out right before you go to bed without a meal afterwards? That could be the cause. Maybe you need to eat something healthy afterwards.

Please let us know what you end up trying and how it works for you!

Thanks so much for all your advice everyone I really appreciate it!

I ended up going to the doctor and he sent me to the cardio for more tests and I have something wrong with my heart which is why I've been feeling so bad after I exercise.

I've got to go for more tests soon & then figure out what we can do to help.

I really appreciate everyone's words of advice though

Sydney, I hope you get well soon. And of course, take a break from exercise, if you haven't already!

This does highlight why "one" should "listen" to there bodies.
Very often we can overlook the importance of these signs, sometimes subtle, sometimes not.
I am a strong believer in listening to "gut" feelings,as well as "cravings", which i get quite often.
My last was bacon and poached eggs. Which i had two times a day for approx' three weeks.
"Safety" should always be the number one priority in these kind of activities,
theres no point in taking chances.

Hi everyone

I thought I'd stop by to give you an update on how I'm doing. Well I've had over 50 hours worth of tests so far - some were really painful and I've got something wrong with my heart and it's a condition the doctors know very little about and they aren't sure what causes it but my Dr has me trialing a combination of different things to see if it improves my condition but if not I'll have to go onto meds with awful side effects.

So fingers crossed the combination helps me a bit!
