Babushkas F/W 07.08
style.com came up with that name for this trend. I think it looks great, and if Audrey Hepburn was doing it, count me in..

True, true, strawberry daiquiri. According to wikipedia, Babushka is a Russian word meaning "grandmother," "mother-in-law" or more generally "old lady".

I just don't see this one catching on...

It could be quite cute, but I don't live in a very open-minded town and I can imagine the granny comments now.

that's right. 'babushka' has nothing to do with clothing. i remember few seasons ago there was a trend for babuska style, which ment lots of scarfs, sockings, baggy clothes and pale make-up. and that thing on the head is just a scarf which is called platok in russian. i suppose babushka sounds more exotic for style.com's editors

I don't like the runway interpretations at all for this trend, but Audrey works it.

it might have to do with 'matryoshka', the nesting dolls
they always have scarves over their heads
and i read once they're also supposed to be babushka/grandmothers, the traditional ones anyway

i think it's cute.. it's kind of close to the turban, maybe more wearable?
i love in the old movies, there are girls with this and then they wear sunglasses and ride a vespa into the distance mystery

Sometimes i do the hood/bonnet thing with a scarf. Like put the middle over my hair to cover it. Wrap one end around the front and back around my neck, same thing with the other end. ANd then tie the ends together on the front side of my neck. I think it's more of an old-fashioned lady look than an old lady look. Like old actresses or our grandmothers probably always wore it like that. I think it's a prettier way and more wearable than the babushka way with the sides sticking out away from your head.

Omg, I'm so glad! I've had a sudden urge to do this for some reason. But I don't think many of the runway looks did it very well. I want to wear a black scarf, since my hair is black and nearly all my clothes are black. I think I could pull it off in the winter.

I collect these! You're right, they always wear scarves. My mother called the scarves babushkas too. I wonder why now.

To be honest I think most people know it's old lady. Actually I grew up thinking "grandmother" but I think the scarf thing is called that too just becaue everyone's grandmother wears those. At least the archetypal grandmother does. I like wearing scarve more in the grace kelly or isadora duncan style. More neck wrapping but still hair covering and sometimes a little length blowing out depending on how big the scarf is.
