"Bling Bling" Luxury F/W 08.09
Designers known for their old school grunge look are having a makeover and are seating in their front row big rappers and divas (think Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera). Not necessarily known for they good tastes in high fashion, but rather for risque nearly tacky overboard luxurious tastes, that's what a lot of shoes were all about.

Inspired by the rich and fabulous from Hollywood. Bold in your face diamond jewelry, vivid colors, luxurious fabrics. Exaggeratedly chic.

You'd need a limo to handle all this. Call it tacky.

I don't know.. I guess I see what could potentially take off as a trend but right now, I see trademarks more than anything.. like Galliano, he is known for that over-the-top style, he's been doing it for ages (reason why I detest him), and then Dsquared.. when have they ever NOT been all about distasteful luxury.. I definitely see the emphasis on jewelery this season.. in shows like Givenchy, Lanvin, and McQueen of course but they seem to be channeling something that aims more to capture opulence as we once knew it.. a lot of the shows had that aura this season, some of them in accessories, and others put it straight into the clothes (Donna Karan, Chlo)..

I'd rather this bling deal than sucking up to rock culture and all this rock lifestyle 24/7 stuff. I'd imagine that some designers will make knock offs to try to make this affordable for femmes of all ages and body types. The Alexander McQueen earrings from Post #6 are a bit of overkill, but are otherwise rather lovely. One of my friends from India has no problem finding cute earrings and has much smaller-size earrings than those earrings in Post #6. The Balenciaga outfit in Post #5 is lovely as well.

The style is sophisticated, sexy (a word I don't use often), and real feminine. I don't mind any sort of bling style with fashion, but I'm not overly opposed to it like a lot of other people. It's fresh air to me when we're not so indulged in rock music fashion and style (not even glam rock) all the time. This is a wonderful style to wear and to be seen in.

Yes, but a few seasons ago, it was all about the old is new thing, with a major boom of vintage inspired clothing, and you even saw models on runway wearing stuff you could get at the salvation army, think Marc by Marc grunge style.

But looking at the most recent shows, I mainly see really chic in your face luxury, inspired by the tackiest. Think of Michael Kors who is inspired by the chic americans flying south every winter. Those with lots of many and the lifestyle that goes with it.

It's all about quantity over quality. I am not saying I like it, it's something I've been seeing a lot.

Rock is dying out. Hip hop culture is getting bigger than ever.

Givenchy was rock meets bling though ? The reasons behind bling in hiphop culture are interesting to analyse though !

^ Yes....... Cause hip hop was originally about black youth rapping about social issues. Not about bling!

Haha I know. No I meant in terms of using it as a display of wealth and status.

I'd perhaps describe this trend as opulence.
