Ethnic References FW 07.08
One of fav collections of the season: Balenciaga is what made me start this thread

it's more in the fabrics that there have been ethnic references from all over the world than the styling.. but still there is a bit of it everywhere..

Balenciaga

wonderful saann.. i guess the interpretation is less literal and less in-your-face this season, which is really great--it's like using old world embroidery and patterns and putting it on a tailored coat or modernising jewelry through fresher combos of colour and materials

Yes that's what I love about it so much this season!

you don't have to have all the pieces so it will become ethnic since it's more in the fabrics than the styling..and you can really wear so many of the pieces in 'normal' outfits and just have ethnic references

I absolutely adore this trend, especially how it was translated at Balenciaga, Anna Sui & Dries van Noten.

does it say which country each is inspired by? it's kind of hard to tell too

maybe some African tribes in Marni accessories
Scottish or English in Vivienne Westwood (plaid and the monarchy symbols) and also for Gaultier
Viktor & Rolf, Dutch costume I guess... the clogs and floral prints
India at Dries van Noten (the paisley and knots), according to the interview with him
And the makeup at Balenciaga definitely looks Native American, but the clothes have me unsure

....it's really as if this season, it's more about using motifs in other countries' traditions for decoration/design although the essence of the garment has nothing to do with that country... besides V&R I think
kind of mix and match, all things jumbled into one meaningless but modern idea, this kind of idea :p

The Anna Sui would be russian

Ghesquiére has said himself according to a magazine that he was inspired by Malasia (the patternmaking), but the collection is definately an oriental, african and indonisian mix.

Westwood is besides the other stuff african inspired too with the prints and the motifs =)

Williamson feels a bit oriental
