This must be the silliest thread ever. I thought the religion was about modesty and anti commercial materialism in showy fashions.

I see this thread as place to show and help other moslem women like me,that you can follow the moslem rules and be stylish at the same time........
God Loves Beauty....that's why he created heaven in the first place....,"We Moslem have to wear our clothes accordingly,so we wont appeal to our opposite sex vulgarly to encourage sinful acts",about modesty... we do against excessiveness...excess is having things that you dont really wear or use, just for the sake of having them,we rather give the money to charity(another moslem law,you have to share with the unfortunates)....I'm a shopaholic, but i shop for the things that i need,to be representable as a wife of a businessman,I'm A housewife/businesswoman myself(though i work from home),I need nice clothes to go to business events, charity events, etc,so I dont see anything wrong with being stylish as a moslem.....

^ I'm nut too sure if its Moslem law per se to wear the hijab. I was reading Karen Armstrong's The Battle for God the other day and she wrote that Moslem women started wearing the hijab only in the 16th Century(I think, I'm not so sure abt the date) as a way for the upper-class Moslems to distinguish themselves from the peasant class. After that, other more lower-class women started wearing it and it became the norm.

I don't know, the issue of the hijab has always been an point of contention for me as a Moslem. I guess we have to decide for yourselves what exactly the Koran means.. and that takes time and experience because every time you read it, it'll mean a different thing for you, depending on where you are in life.

I struggled with how to respond to this b/c it makes no sense - Religion predates concepts such as commercialism and materialism, and anything in Islam which might be applied to these ideas simply says that emphasis should be placed on your inner self as opposed to your outer.
That does not mean you have to wear a sack, or dull colours, or have no adornment.
Modesty does not equal ugliness. I don't know how else to put it.

[QUOTE=chocolatestain;3294152]^ I'm nut too sure if its Moslem law per se to wear the hijab. YES....you are correct about that! moslem women only started to wear hijab in the 16th Cent.....Prophet Mohammad command us to,with the permission of GOD.
but the reason behind the rule is because of so many sex crimes and adultery happened at that time,so Prophet Muhammad's Idea was that we Men and Women(not only women)Limit other people Except our "Mahrom"(Fathers,Mothers,Brothers,Sisters,Husbands ,Wives)To View most parts of our body, including body hairs....
About the Upper class and Lower class thing,at that ancient time, even the simplest thing such as fabrics were considered luxurious...especially in the arab world, where civilisation was not as advanced as in Rome and Greece for instance,so most of the poor could'nt afford to buy extra fabrics to cover themselves....most of them wore rags basically, that is why a women with a full covered veil considered "Rich". one hadith mentioned that once,a very poor couple went to the prophet Mohammad seeking advice, they told the prophet that they were sooo poor, that they both only have 1set of decent clothing to cover themselves,so the prophet suggest that they should share, they should go out of their house in turn,as long as they cover themselves properly
I'm not here to debate, but i thought i would share what i've learned from the Qur'an and hadisth...But i'm not against Moslems who has not cover themselves,it's really an individual choice....Religion is a Private relationship between each of us and GOD,No other God's Creature can judge us on that Except GOD himself.

I have to correct this,i thought you were saying 6th century, not 16th,Only a few years after Mohammad became a prophet.............
