Having been awoken to line , cut , charisma and the idea of exclusivity , it was very hard on me to be denied clothes that would have reflected my growing ' taste ' , honed on such phenomena as Yves Saint Laurent's revolutionary ' beat ' collection for Christian Dior , before he was hounded out of that house . That's why I feel guilty for chasing the ' chimera ' of perfect designer clothes in the hunt to buy myself all the things that I wanted . It really IS a world in which materialism has taken over , and I feel guilty when I think that I have bought into it in being so self - indulgent . Who was it that went to Paris to seek out the ' vainglories ' of the Montana boutique , rather drinking in the heritage of Notre Dame , The Louvre , Versailles , FIRST ? !!!! I have succumbed to the opiate of the masses , bought into the consumer society , but I suppose , in mitigation , it's probably slightly better than leading a gin-sodden life of oblivion as the ' great unwashed ' ( where lie my roots ) did in Victorian times , or fall for all consuming fundamentalist religious fervour or seeing in some totalitarian political idealogy the answer to everything . We live in a superficial world , generally , more's the pity , but I suppose there could be a worse one . It helps to be aware of this and of one's own character , at the same time ; me being a male UK designer - fashion Freak , or someone else , equally as self - aware , not a million miles from TFS , known to me as ' the crazy high - fashion cheetah from Nolita ' !!!!! LOL Kit - no need to be guilt ridden - your interest in fashion is at least not a shallow one.... and who says Versailles is more honourable than YSL? surely your appreciation/consumption of ysl is testament to just how much society has changed from the days of 'let them eat cake' (i know its a misquote) or even the days when our forbears worke ddown coal mines aged 14. Maybe we forget just how terrible and bleak life was for people in the past

According to Rousseau: Our luxuries and goods bring us farther apart from each other because we become centered on what we have and how we can better live than that of others and our community as a whole. Thinking inwardly and only trying to develop yourself as successful in the private sphere (think Donald Trump), is placing your focus in the wrong place. We should think about trying to succeed in the public sphere because we can develop our real identities not from all this "stuff" but through our meaningful relationships with others and a strong sense of community.

Wow! Really interesting topic shoexgal, and great reading everyone's replies. There's not much I can add except to say that every year I visit Bali to relax and shop (for things that I don't really need I must admit
) and I always come home so blown away by the local people and their lives, and somewhat disillusioned by the excesses in my life. Many of the Balinese people have barely enough money to feed and cloth themselves, yet they seem to go about their lives with such an amazing happy and carefree spirit. Their community and family responsibilities are so important to them. I'm usually left feeling ashamed of my comparitive selfishness and consumerism. |

I went to the beach for memorial day and I felt so happy to see people actually have a great time without having to spend money. It was just the simple pleasures of life that made me feel so good. The kids were splashing in the water. The parents were kissing under umbrellas. It was all very real, unlike going to the mall for your memorial day..nothing against that...but it just made me happy
