By the way, Helena Bonham Carter's Marla Singer of Fight Club was pulling it off back in '99.

Just think we owe her some credit..

^ that's an interesting little article, thanks virginelle.

and yes, we must pay homage to ms. helena bonham carter, the corset queen herself. she has always done the new gothic style we are discussing in this thread so beautifully...

is Raf Simons gothic at all??? I would think so...?
is men's gothic harder to pull off (without looking 'goth' or like D&D dork)?
This is a fun thread. I have been thinking about gothic for the past few months, it must be in the air (because I'm not up on current runway trends).
I'm thinking new gothic might use a fuller palete: less 100% black outfits. Maybe not possible. Just a thought. I mean, a person needs to pull it ahead or else they run the risk of just looking 80's retro gothic.
I can't help but think of Edward Gorey. (RIP)

I have the same question too, can guys pull off the 'goth' look in a stylish way? Does anyone have examples of nice 'goth' inspired men's fashion? Love this thread too

Raf has a very Berlin-esque feel about his clothes...more like a style derivivtive of Ian Curtis of Joy Division. The mood and the styling of his shows can be quite darkly but not sure if I'd associate it wholely with the new sensibility--which is about a more romantic approach;more texture, detail and alot more volume...which also goes back to the aesthetics they were at initially and during Victoriana.

thanks Scott.
I am not afriad (but I am tall and sort of long armed so it makes it less comfortable). When I was younger I'd 'mix and match' a bit. But now in my crippling old age (over 30)... I made it the first rule that the clothes must fit well and be comfortable. But good point, I will broader my horizons (again) perhaps.
The Ian Curtis' example was good. He and the asthetics surounding the bands (joy d, and New order) was beautiful (and gothic) a mix of post modern, street punk, and victorian gothic. I forget the name of the artist behind the whole thing but very nice.
Soft grey I checked out the Ann D mens wear. Very nice. Not what I'd consider 'gothic' at first glance.... very cool. thanks. You are a sweet heart.

I love this thread! I'm glad it seems to be thriving now

I've been thinking about how to wear this look in a more casual way, since a lot of the gorgeous looks that have been posted seem more dressy than I ever really have the occasion to get Anyone have ideas? Pics would be great, too

Also been thinking about bags to wear with new gothic clothes... so far I think the bottega veneta jardin bag or the prada frame bag in black would be my choices, though I probably won't get either

**EDIT : PICS DELETED. MISSING CREDITS.**

Two questions...

- Isn't the goth style a young style (ie; under 20?) Would it make a young professional woman look immature?

- This season is a more delecate, frilly goth? Hostile/punk-like aspects are out? (Ie, chunky platform boots, dramatic haircolor, lots of buckles and d-rings)?

I've been meaning to post that Bottega bag here, it does have a sort of gothic appeal doesn't it?

my pleasure....

that is the point my dear...
not that horrible mall 'goth'...
but a softer and sweeter, more 'gentle' and romantic version...

the NEW gothic...

mmm...those are both GORGEOUS bags la_mie....
thanks for posting them...
i think you are right...
it;'s sort of obvious how to wear this for evening...
but wearing if for day takes a bit more creativity..

how about a blk or white lacy or eyelet victorian style blouse with grey flannel trousers or culottes and great blk lthr boots...?!?...

***i feel that the way to make this work for day is to pair something more 'gothic' with something classic and tailored...to avoid looking like you've just stepped out of a charles dickens novel......

What do you think of this bag, la_mie? A bit more reasonable at $690 ... Ferragamo, neimanmarcus.com ... I really like it myself. (Velvet, leather, feathers ...)

To me "new Gothic" and Victorian are almost inextricably intertwined, given the Victorians' fascination with death, mourning, black, etc. ... Btw, there's lots of cool Victorian mourning jewelry ... although it's a bit downbeat for me personally
