I don't know about the Tuleh stuff either. I find that's in the vein of Marc Jacobs trying to capture some sort of nostalgia. I mean petty coats(as in the style of the dresses)....I love the way they look and most certainly are part of it....I just think they took it didn't reallly do a whole lot with it. It looks really uninspired to me.
In regard to your weariness,Lena....to be honest,I think this "new Gothic"-as it were-has been mucking about for a while. Especially amongst the underground talents....not to mention specifically the vein it's honed on most every Belgian and rising Brit designer over the years. So I don't think it's necessarily a current or rising trend of the season...more so I think it just highlight's how much Gothic and it's meaning has emphasised fashion these days and over the years. If you all know what I mean. And I don't really believe it to have an incredible impact on commerce either. Perhaps, with certain niche circles but generally I don't see en masse people vying to get these kinds of looks.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I thought this website might be helpful in differentiating between gothic and victorian dress.
Late Gothic: http://www.mauritia.de/en/medieval/ma3.html http://www.mauritia.de/en/medieval/ma2.html Victorian (an era that coincided with the Gothic revival): http://www.mauritia.de/en/bieder/bieder3.html http://www.mauritia.de/en/gruender/gruender3.html Just based on some research on google, gothic can refer to a style of art and architecture during the middle ages, a genre of literature originating in the late 1800's, and the subculture that emerged in the late 1970's. This website provides a summary of how the term "gothic" evolved: http://www.fluxeuropa.com/history_of_gothic.htm Anyway, learning about the origins of gothic style really helped me understand what "new gothic" means. |

tourist, thanks very much for the links!
Yes,I think it helps to learn the history in order not just to understand but also to appreciate the evolution.

thanks Lena and you're welcome Scott! I love this style, esp when influenced more by the religious themes of the Gothic era than the subculture.

i certainly HOPE so...
![]() so what's all the drama about keeping within a specific era...?!?!... why do we have to define it so meticulously...and 'painfully'... imo.. style is about picking and choosing from all over and creating your own unique look... ![]() true style 'overlaps'... ![]() |

Gothic style seems to mean different things to different people. I don't think we *have* to define it so meticulously, but I personally found it helpful to define its origins in order to understand its influences on the modern day versions of it. Essentially, looking at the origins provides insight as to what elements make seemingly different styles fall under the same umbrella.
That said, I think Scott's definition of what is Gothic makes total sense: " And it's not just about black....Goth for me is about layers, heaviness and texture and most importantly that moody attitude." Which, as Softgrey pointed out, is much more modern when it incorporates elements from different eras and styles. I can't wait for fall! ![]() |

oh thank you,tourist
![]() Yeah,I don't see it as a way of trying to define specifically...the costume-y aspects et al...it's a way of understanding what it's all about;where it derived and how much it changed. Plus, one can take certain ideas from those era's and sort re-interpret it with something fresher. It's like when Thea and Justin was doing it for a while there, they were sort of mixing the Victorian with the Medievel sensibility all the while in their own distinct manner. But I agree...there really is no literal connection in terms of dress. Every movement had their own distinction. But perhaps idealistically and aesthetically one can say there was some degree of connection.
