The Paper-Bag Waist
I see the return of the pleated, paper-bag waisted pant. Here is an article I wrote about it, which you can view at

What are your thoughts?

------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe the Paper Bag Princess had it right?

I am the first to admit it - I have been on the flat-front bandwagon for as long as I can remember; the word ‘pleats’ once made the hairs on my neck stand upright, my eyeballs retreat decidedly into their sockets, as if to eradicate any mental image of these ‘folded-eyesores’, and my lips purse in complete and under disgust. The ‘pleat’, particularly when joined with ‘pants’, had become a dirty word - a taboo, of sorts, among the fashion crowd.

Louis Vutton F/W 06WWW.STYLE.COM

Flash forward to 2006. Tom Ford has all but disappeared from the runways and Britney Spears has fallen from her iconic status, or rather, has crashed and burned onto the tabloid-frequenting, class-challenged B-list, next to Star Jones and Kimberly Stewart. It is a different world out there, so why are we wearing the same pants we wore in 1999?

Marc Jacobs F/W 06 WWW.STYLE.COM

The paper-bag waist is the saviour to all this. Refreshingly loose, remarkably chic, this pleated pant looks right amongst falls layered, loose looks. When paired with a fitted top, it has a Katherine Hepburn-like quality to it, cinching in the waist with remarkable success. For narrow figures, it adds needed volume, while also giving fuller figures just enough leeway to keep things looking classy, not trashy.

If anything, it has a no-fuss, relaxed quality about it that makes it highly desirable. Think Mariah Carey’s pink, spandex mini dresses. Got it? Then think of the complete opposite. Now you’ve got it.

The Pleat Bandwagon is approaching…are your coming onboard?

ok- technically...
the pics that you posted are NOT paperbag waists...

they are just loose wide leg pants...

BIG DIFFERENCE...
and two entirely different silhouettes...
so comletely different looks...

in any case...
i hate the paperbag thing...
it didn't work in the 80's and it's not going to work now...

they may do what you did---and find another style and call it paperbag...
but an actual paperbag waist would not really look good on anyone...
imho...

*i can tell you've never worn a pair yourself...:p

Is the paperbag waist the one where the pants are loose and pleated, then converge at a point on the waist, and then stick out an inch or two beyond that? I can't explain it... I'll go look for a picture. I've been thinking about this. I think some people can pull it off. I think I can. I probably won't find any such pants in my area though.

I do understand what you mean, though they there are similar to this pic in Vogue.

it's always belted...
the pants are HUGE-with usually no pleats..
and are just gathered and bunched at the waist...

like the top of a paper bag...*hence the name...
i have a pair from marni...
i'll try to find a pic too...

*they are SO hard to wear....they are so bunchy...

Ok, I found a pic. This is scanned by me from the September issue of Marie Claire. Are these the right type of pants?

oh -classic fashion....
thanks for that!..
yep- that's what they are doing...
changing the definition of a paperbag waist......

if it has a WAISTBAND then it isn't a paperbag waist..
but- no matter...
vogue is the fashion BIBLE...
and if GOD----i mean ANNA...says that is a paperbag waist...
well- then...
we all better start calling it that too!!...

I actually really think it will become a trend, because I've been eyeing these large pants since the collections came out, and I have an odd knack for these things. I go by gut feelings. Luckily, I'm one of those annoying skinny types that can pull this look off I'd try it for fun if only I find such a pair here in the barren fashion land of Vancouver.

skinny and even no hips won't save you dear i'm afraid...
you're talking to the 90 pound wonder....
it's nothing to do with size...it's to do with proportion...

but- hey...
give it a shot...let's see what you can do...:p...

you should post an outfit...

Haha softgrey ^^ I'm sure that, since you've already seen them before (and they're new to me), you're probably right. I would just love to try them anyways. I mean, if they look decent on the runways, they should be fine. Again, I'm just not sure that I'll find any within my price range (still in highschool, parents not loaded haha).

really softie?
i think chloe sevigny could pull this off.
i do.

i would love to be able to pull it off...
the silhouette is so dramatic
but you are right, it may sound good in theory but not in practice.

i know my mom had a pair or two back in the good old 80s
(don't remember if she pulled it off or not, she was *mom* and everything looked good on her when i was that young!)

See I'm just imagining a fit like in the picture below, with a bit of poof at the top of the waistband. I'd wear them with a fitted top or sweater in a similar shade. Speaking in proportions, I'm 5'10''. Good? No good?
