What's the term for those shorts that are sort of like overalls... but they are really just shorts with thick straps to hold them up over a shirt? The straps aren't clip on suspenders, they are attached to the shorts
Augh. I spent my childhood in the 70s, and I had a rainbow striped terry-cloth spaghetti-strap romper just like the very first one posted. I do not miss this style at all. Rompers, drawstring pants, gauchos & ponchos; even a very few years ago, I could laugh about these things, thinking "only in the 70s, thank God."
I've been noticing this "trend" for a while now. One designer or two will make a playsuit every summer but it never really catches on mainstream. Until now. I've seen them in a few shows here for the Summer season plus noticed them in music video clips etc.
And Pinafores have been quite noticeable in many designers shows, even YSL did an evening wear version that Gemma Ward wore on a Vogue cover. I remember seeing someone wearing a bright blue Marc Jacobs pinafore in a picture as well but have no idea which season it was from.
Personally I think the pinafore is much easier to wear and I will definitely be making myself one. But I love the idea of wearing a playsuit to the beach it's so cute and summery
Anyway, here's just a few pics from the Spring/Summer season here in Oz.

good trendspotting tmsta, they're becoming quite popular all of a sudden - topshop has some really cute ones that are very similar to the camilla and marc ones...and I actually quite like those ones because they have a very pretty empire waist like and flow about them. I'm seeing a lot of girls wearing them on the street as well, usually layered with something like leggings or a cami or something. I prefer them worn alone though. but summer is almost over and so I'm not keen to buy into something I can only wear for another month. I just don't really feel like it's the sort of thing that seamlessly moves through the seasons. it's definitely a summer item.
i also agree that this is typically more of a summer thing... i have a vintage pastel striped playsuit that i'd wear if i'm feeling a little silly during the summer, but i definitely couldn't imagine wearing it past august. although i do like ysl's take on it... i could see that making the transition.
