Spats

Okay I posted this under the garter post, but under the advisement of Softgrey I'll make it a new one. Something that has my attention as a great accessory for Fall/Winter is spats. These are great for both men and women, and could be vary versatile going from very formal to just playful. They seem to me to be an underexposed item that deserves a makeover.

These are the more formal variant. Now there is the risk of looking too "gangster" or that you may have wandered away from the rest of the marching band. Obviously updating them in novel fabrics would rid them of this stigma, giving them a more modern look. Spats in various traditional suit woolens like a dark herringbone or houndstooth for instance. A more playful take on the classic would be in a distressed white leather, or a more formal look would have them in luxurious satin.

Now those above are more in the military tradition of spats which today could be worn with anything even jeans. Once again these can be updated from the drab wool to something like a plaid or tartan, or even a modern color. Different leathers and fur, real or faux, would also be an option. A Missoni or Pucci pattern would be nice for the ladies. Paisley or other tie like patterns would be a unique twist for the men, sort of like these (but with much better shoes).

Please just don't buy them out of a bag. . .

They look quite interesting...

I initially thought this topic was going to be about spats, as in, bitchy arguments among fashionistas becoming tres chic!

Hmm I've never thought about spats before but they're actually quite fashionable!. It'd be neat to see them used with different unexpected shoes.

I've been wanting a pair for a long time, can't buy them anywhere here, found a pair in an antique store once but they didn't fit me, too small But I've been planing on making my self a few pairs

I can imagine how cool almost knee high spats will look with a good skirt

This is a great idea. I've been trying to find boots similar to these, but I bet a similar look could be achieved with knee high or higher spats.

Of course the foldover wouldn't be as big, but you could get a fold of 3" or so probably and have the look of under the knee boots. It would be cool to use spats and then perhaps a flat shoe with a pointy toe.

Keep your eyes open for Spring 2005's ultimate accessory: leather spats. The spat was clinched by a zip and worn with elegant high heels at Emporio Armani. Combined with polo inspired harem trousers the effect is beautiful and elegant. A less subtle approach could be found at Tristan Webber's show in London. But then again, his silver spats will take you into a glorious Studio 54 mood.

That's what I was thinking.
I like them generally, but they're very specified to a certain type of individual.
