It seems that the Steampunk influence has permeated the Highstreet at last. The autumn/ winter collections at AllSaints include some pieces which would compliment this look. In particukar the 'hitch-style' range in black cotton with either a button down shirt top or a leather strap and buckle with bib top for the dresses.

elody dress

Supreme dress

Byrony Hitch dress

For a more subcultural designer www.Heavyred.com specialise in 'Gothic Couture' and have some beautiful Steampunk inspired peices:

On a personal note I'm not overly keen on taking peices from a subculture and incorporating into a mainstream look. For me this has more a 'dress up' feel to it than committing to the whole look. (and I know for a fact that it drives the hardcore fans balmy- e.g. when burlesque was en vogue for 5 minutes recently, or the mainstream obsesion with 'Gothic' every autumn)

Something like this perhaps would fit into the category?

A little bit a shot in the dark since i only first heard about this trend just yesterday whilst random searching tfs. and then i found this site on wonderful susie's blog.

A entire lifestyle of steampunk seems like it requires too much time & devotion.. not to mention... too costume-y.. but i'd definitely would definitely snatch that fedora, waistcoat, with a pair of jodphurs maybe... do i contradict myself?

Hi

I thought I'd made it clear but I guess not- my images above are from 'www.Allsiants.co.uk' and 'www.heavyred.com'.

I agree. Living in the stylish steampunk garb would be a bit of a hassle. Modern clothing is simplified for a reason. But as they say, "it seems like it would be a nice place to visit."

I've never entered this thread before but looking on etsy for cufflinks for my boyfriend's dad I came across some steampunk ones that were gorgeous. Basically complete replica's of watch movements. So lovely.

I love alot of the design elements of steampunk, the industrial turn of the century look with a does of travel. I've seriously considered orderating a steampunk laptop or keyboard!

Here is a site that I personally love. She also does a great kaboodle list of steampunk items which you can find at the bottom of the page.

I like Steampunk! It reminds me of the time I was playing the PC game Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura. Also of the anime Steamboy. If you're really into this stuff you can check this e-zine: http://www.steampunkmagazine.com/ Even though it looks great on the magazines, pictures, cosplays I think it will be hard to pull of as an everyday streetwear.

This is interesting, I had seen the term in descriptions on Etsy etc. but I didn't know what it was. It reminds me of the bad guy in Wild Wild West!

^Etsy is amazing for steampunk jewelery! I've gotten some really nice, and inexpensive jewellery from that site.
I really dig this style. I think taking small steampunk pieces and incorporating them into your everyday clothes is really unique and cute, and it doesn't feel like wearing a costume.

I've only seen people dress this way in videogames. But I'm intrigued.

Did this all come from the super-train scene in "Back To The Future Part III," or was there precedent?

That's a cool observation, I was always so into that scene. I have some fantastic jewelry from Etsy too, some old watches that were made into necklaces, etc. This is definitely one trend I absolutely love
