Caroline breakup story stuns pals of Kennedys

Celebrity breakups are so common, we barely blink when they're reported.
But one high-profile relationship most people considered solid as a rock has been the marriage of Caroline Kennedy and her husband, industrial designer Edwin Schlossberg.
So a story about a possible Kennedy-Schlossberg split -- first reported by the Rush & Molloy column in the New York Daily News Monday -- came as quite a shock to several Chicago friends and associates of the couple. Yet, some think the couple may have hit a "rough patch" and perhaps they are "kind of leading separate lives."
Yet, like Rush & Molloy, this column is getting conflicting stories from several extremely close Kennedy intimates -- some convinced the couple is having problems, but others denying anything substantial has changed in Kennedy and Schlossberg's relationship in recent years.
"Anyone paying attention has long realized Ed and Caroline go their separate ways, except when it involves their children -- who they both adore -- or their life outside the public eye," a lifelong Caroline Kennedy friend told me Monday.
"I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of charity events in New York where Ed has joined Caroline the past several years. He hates those things and has always made it clear he won't go -- unless it's a cause he personally cares about. ... So, to point to the fact they haven't been seen much together in public -- as proof they are splitting up -- is really ridiculous," the friend added.
Yet, another friend, who also asked for anonymity, did say the couple "are on separate tracks. ... But don't be thinking there will be a divorce. Caroline would never want that. ... They seem to be working on keeping things together -- at least for the children."
Three other sources -- long close to the Kennedy clan across the board -- told me Monday, "This is the first I've heard of it," when asked about a possible Kennedy-Schlossberg breakup or trial separation.
uCalls to both Kennedy's and Schlossberg's offices requesting comment on this were not returned.

THE TURBULENT life of Caroline Kennedy has suffered another setback with reports that her husband has finally decided to end their 'sham' marriage.
Heiress Caroline Kennedy - her father President JFK was murdered and her brother John Junior died in a plane crash - can now apparently add husband Ed Schlossberg to the list of loved ones lost.
Friends say the couple have been living separate lives for some time but, when Ed opted not to even bother to show up to the family's traditional month-long summer holiday in Cape Cod, it became apparent the marriage was unmendable.
Now legal eagles are rubbing their hands together in anticipation of a messy divorce case.
Recent pictures in glossy magazines showed a bikini-clad Caroline, 50, frolicking on her late brother's luxury boat with son Jack and daughter Rose. But hubby Ed, 62, was nowhere to be seen.
A Kennedy source said: "Caroline has always been very secretive. You never know what's going on with her and Ed. But there have been questions about their marriage and this will only add to them."
Others though have been more forceful, insisting Schlossberg's absence is proof that the 21-year marriage is all over.
Gossip guru George Rush said: "They're kind of leading separate lives - but Ed is still very involved in the lives of their children."
The couple's luxury Hamptons home has also been put on the market for more than EUR5million.
If they do decide to end the marriage, Caroline's multi-million dollar fortune - which grew greater after the deaths of her brother JFK Jnr and mother Jackie - could be on the line if she wed without a pre-nuptial agreement.
