Charlotte is funny no matter what she does. I mean, she can be super mystical and dreamy and weird and all that, but she's really such a comedienne. Totally French.

Here's a video link of behind-the-scenes footage of Charlotte shooting for French Vogue; she looks incredible in Balenciaga, unlike when Kate Hudson wore B for US Vogue, she looked so graceless and clumpy

I love this video.
Balenciaga is made for her in my opinion. I would love seeing screen caps of this video. ![]() |

There's a small article (one page) on her in German Rolling Stone. I only translated the interview, hope this hasn't been posted.
Rolling Stone: Why is this the right time for your first real album? Charlotte Gainsbourg: I have wanted to do this for a really long time but I didn't know how to get started -- I love music very much, so I wanted a good start. Sure, I did some recordings with my late father but of course this hasn't had anything to do with my own statement as a singer. When Air's JB and Nicolas came to me two years ago and asked me if I wanted to work with them it seemed like the right moment, even though I had some qualms. But I've loved Air ever since their first album and their style was just right for my own album so I did it. And then you sat together in the studio and wrote songs? I know that I'm not a songwriter, I needed other people to make a record. I wasn't really involved in the songwriting process, I just listened to what JB and Nicolas had written for me. But I still think that I influenced the songs with my presence in the studio. Like a muse maybe. Are you the woman in the songs? Not really. Of course I recognise parts of me but the album is not about self-dramatizing. I wanted to own the songs just like I own a part in a movie. I wanted to live them, I wanted to breathe them. Did you never tell them what to write? No, not really. Neil Hannon had written one or two songs but he didn't have time after that. It got really exciting when Jarvis Cocker came into the studio. We sat together and we talked a lot to find out what we wanted as a theme. We soon agreed on this nightly dreamlike scenery and wrote the lyrics from that point of view. Working with Jarvis was fantastic. It was almost as if he could see right through me. One could say that the lyrics and the music fit the image that people have of you and your parents? I know that my music is kind of similar to my father's but especially with the lyrics I wanted to distance myself from my father. How did you do that? I sang the songs in English instead of my native language. That's a very big difference. Will you be a musician, play concerts and release records on a regular basis from now on? I don't make any plans but I have qualms about playing concerts. You have to be a good performer and you have to be good on stage. I have no real experience and to be honest I don't have the talent my father had. That's why I don't think I will perform on stage as a singer. So you'll still be an actress? Absolutely, I love acting and I can't imagine sacrificing a lot of time for something else. But I have to admit I enjoyed making the album and that I would like to do more. |
