Burlesque and the Art of the Teese / Fetish and the Art of the Teese
These promotional posters were sometimes given out, and signed by Dita Von Teese, during book signings for Burlesque and the Art of the Teese. I bought this one recently from a memorabilia seller in London. It’s too large to scan; the first image was provided by the seller. The second is just a digital copy of the promotional collage that was floating around online at the time of the book’s release.

Burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese turns 40
By Daniel Bettridge
Dita von Teese is without doubt one of the most famous adult performers on the planet. Dubbed the ‘queen of burlesque’ she’s helped to repopularise the art form with her elaborate retro performances. She’s currently launching her own fragrance in Great Britain so MSN UK caught up with the woman who’s put the tease back into striptease to find out about pre-performance jitters, handling male attention and when she feels the most sexy.
One thing that’s apparent about your performances is how elegant and sophisticated it is, especially compared to some of the more ‘in your face’ forms of adult entertainment. Why do you think adult entertainment has got so much more pornified over recent years?
It’s a natural evolution, and the truth of the matter is, hard-core pornography has existed since the invention of the camera! The images exist as proof, and some of them were very hard-core… you can even see explicit orgy scene tin-types and even films from the early 1900s. And anyway, I think it’s good that there are lots of options out there. My way certainly shouldn’t be the only way!
It’s easy to see why men would enjoy a burlesque show, but what would you say to critics who say it sublimates women?
Well, the fact of the matter is, over 70% of my audience is comprised of women and gay men, so anytime I’m criticised for being anti-feminist, it’s always from someone who hasn’t actually seen my show. A lot of women like burlesque because they see it as an inspiration, especially ones like my Strip Strip Hooray! show, which has a diverse selection of performers with varying body types and ethnicities.
Many of the burlesque fans see it as a way to feel beautiful and sexy without feeling the need to fit into the typical modern-day standards of beauty, where the emphasis seems to be on unattainable, natural, bikini-model, so-called healthy-looking tanned slim bodies. It’s about sensual freedom, and the enjoyment of sex and fun of a playful nature. But really, now the audience for burlesque is diverse, you have people from all walks of life, all ages. I do say it’s also a great place to meet girls like me though, we definitely have a vast number of women in the audience wearing red lipstick and garterbelts!
You’re known as the queen of burlesque, is there pressure to keep that image up always?
I just try to continue to do the best show I can, that’s all. I don’t have a problem maintaining my image though, it’s very natural and easy for me, because the way I am is the only way I know how to be, I am my own art project, my own creation, I’m not the product of a team of stylists.
Do you ever get nervous before going on stage?
Sure, but not in a paralysing or scared kind of way, but in a ‘I really just want to do a good job’ kind of way. I tend to get some nervous energy, which I use to my advantage… it keeps me on my toes!
Any funny stories about your time on stage, when something’s gone wrong?
Things can always go wrong, usually it’s to do with the costume getting the best of me or a prop malfunctioning. It’s part of the fun of seeing live entertainment, to see how the performer deals with the little snafus.
When do you feel most sexy?
I feel most sexy during those magical moments onstage when everything feels right, when the energy is right and the audience is right there with me, giving back to me. I also feel seixiest when I’m with someone that I have that magical sexual chemistry combined with love, and when there’s no doubt, no inhibitions.
You’re in the public eye quite a lot, which I’m sure means you get plenty of male attention. How do you cope with it all?
I just try to do the best I can, which is not always easy when it comes to dating, because you can be photographed out with someone once and suddenly you’re pegged as a couple, so there’s a whole new element that makes dating even more uncomfortable than it already is.
Do people, especially men, treat you differently because of what you do?
I guess I don’t really know, it’s hard for me to distinguish between how men treat me as opposed to other women, but I suppose I can tell fairly quickly if a man wants to know the real me or is just into my onstage persona.
You’re always perfectly presented and confident on stage, do men ever get put off as a result?
I guess so… I am often told I am too intimidating to approach. But on the positive side of things, it weeds out the weak!
What do you look for in a man?
I like being with men who have the same kind of sense of humour as me. Once I tried dating someone who had a lot of great attributes, but he was lacking in the humour department, and I really missed that dynamic I had with other significant relationships I’ve had. Laughter and wit are extremely sexy attributes, and so I won’t really seriously date someone who isn’t funny and quick-witted.
I also need to be with a man that has his own thing going, and the confidence to hold his own power in the relationship. So I look for men that have established themselves, because I’m done apologising for my success, I’m just ready to enjoy it with someone deserving! I really need to be with a man who allows me to really let go and be ultra-feminine, a man who can take charge.
If you could name one thing that makes a man sexy what would it be?
Being a gentleman is sexy.
And what’s a definite turn off?
A man who brags about money.
What’s your ideal first date?
My ideal date is a low-key dinner, somewhere that isn’t too fancy or expensive and just has good food, good lighting, is quiet and private and feels cosy.
What’s the worst chat up line someone’s ever tried on you?
Well, asking to take a picture with me is a surprisingly common first-approach no-go.
You’ve got such a busy schedule do you have time for relationships or does work come first?
Work has come first the past few years, but I’m ready to make my relationship come first when I find the right match.
How do you keep in shape?
I do pilates and take ballet classes.
What’s your most prized possession?
My cat Aleister.
And the most expensive thing you own?
Probably my stage costumes and props.
Who’s the most famous person in your phonebook?
I’m not sure who you would consider the most famous, there are lots of contenders, but I’m going to go with who’s been famous the longest: Mamie Van Doren
What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?
Ride a horse, probably. I’ve been taking dressage lessons the past few months, and for me, as someone who’s never been around horses, it can be scary.
How do you relax?
I love to cook, drive my 1953 Cadillac and go to antique flea markets.
Tell us something we don’t know about you?
Oh I don’t know… this is the hardest question I’m asked, I feel like I’ve revealed everything I care to!
Everything about her seems so perfect. It's basically a t-shirt and a skirt and yet she looks so put together.
"It’s up to you to make everyday as perfect as possible.
It’s a question of will and discipline."— Karl Lagerfeld
