Dita Von Teese dons a cool pair of shades while exiting a pilates classon Tuesday (July 9) in Los Feliz, Calif.

“Evidence that we aren’t quite as cool as we think: Circa 1911, Maud Wagner, Female Tattoo Artist,” the 40-year-old burlesque beauty tweeted the day before.

She dyes her own hair correct? What brand and what shade does she use? Because I don't see that glaring auburn color coming from the hair when the sun hits it. I like it a lot.

I color my own hair, too. I hate beauty salons. I just hate them. I hate them because I hate making appointments for something else, another appointment, and I hate spending the money. I like to have my hair freshly dyed every two weeks without fail, and I like to color on my own time while I’m multitasking. Plus, black hair is easy; if you do streaks and highlights it’s different. I’ve been coloring it black since 1992—I don’t really change the formula; it’s always blue-black. I use Garnier 100% Color, and right now, I squeeze a little bit of blue from another brand into it, but I don’t think I’ve found the magic color yet. I’m always trying to get it bluer. In terms of hair maintenance, I never like expensive hair products, but I just got this line and it’s totally changed my life. It’s called Obliphica; it’s made here in the States. I discovered it when I was just grabbing some new shampoos and conditioners. I’ve tried everything, all the expensive lines where it costs a thousand dollars a bottle, but this stuff is amazing.

I just saw her show last night in Chicago. UNBELIEVABLE! Her corsets are so so tiny. And between the Swarovski crystals and the glitter confetti, I've never seen more sparkle in my entire life!

Chicago Tribune: Sometimes, it’s hard being Dita Von Teese

There are days when Dita Von Teese, the legendary burlesque dancer and vaunted beauty, the Gypsy Rose Lee of her generation, wishes she looked less like Dita Von Teese and more like Kate Upton.

It’s because Heather Sweet, from Michigan, once realized that she would never look like a swimsuit model that Dita Von Teese, an implacable mass of carefully applied makeup, weaponized sex appeal, retro glamour and immaculate everything, even exists.

Sweet, whose burlesque revue “Strip Strip Hooray” arrives at the House of Blues for four shows starting Thursday, began as a lingerie saleswoman, fetish model and stripper, transforming herself along the way into the more exotic Von Teese. She slowly, inexorably built herself into a brand and her brand into a mini-empire, complete with endorsement deals and her own perfume and lingerie lines.

In a recent phone interview, Von Teese, 40, was polite and practical, an evangelist for self-made beauty: She seemed less like a figure of mystique and more like a disconcertingly regular girl who just happens to be both the ex-wife of Marilyn Manson (they’re still friendly) and a self-described “aesthetic control freak” who takes serious, almost existential issue with casual footwear like Crocs (“I just feel like there are things that are for home”). Here are some highlights from the edited transcript.

Her audience is mostly women, and she’s not sure why

“You will not find a group of straight guys hanging out at my show. Any men there are with their girlfriends, or they’re gay. … I don’t know (why). A lot of women are finding empowerment out of seeing various kinds of beauty and sensuality and seeing eroticism in a different way than what you normally see, and I don’t think that’s necessarily something men as a whole — the regular guy isn’t looking for that.”

On the differences between burlesque performers and strippers

“We all have our different ideas of what we think is beautiful and sexy. I would not say my way is the end-all, be-all. I know better than that. … I would never claim to say I’m classier or better than what you would see in a strip club, because that’s how I got my start. I am a stripper. I am one of them.”

On not looking like a swimsuit model

“Old Hollywood (beauty), for me, it seemed easier to attain that kind of beauty because I could paint it and wash it away when I’m done. When I look at the cover of Sports Illustrated … I appreciate it and admire that kind of beauty and think maybe in another life I’m going to come back as that kind of beauty. But, actually, I’d rather be me, because I have an affection for anyone that has arrived to a different kind of substance with hard work and dedication.”

On the difference between Dita and Heather

“I’m Heather all the time. You’ll see little glimpses of Heather Sweet from Michigan when I’m onstage. I haven’t changed my character. … I’m the same person. There’s people in my life who still call me by my real name, because they’ve known me my whole life. People I’m very intimate with, like long-term boyfriends. I’m not trying to abandon my name or where I’m from or anything.”

What she looks like when she’s off duty

“I’ve learned in my adult life that my vulnerability is a strength. I love to be seen for who I really am. I’m not hiding behind a facade or a mask of makeup; it’s just something I do as a woman. It’s a ritual I love. (Being well-turned out) is almost like having good manners. It’s just, like, what you do.”

On career longevity

“There’s certain burlesque dancers that did go on and on, and others that just didn’t. It’s really about having a plan and thinking about why it is that people want to come see you. It’s not just because your (butt) is nice; it’s not just because your boobs are pretty. Because most of the greatest burlesque stars, and I will include myself in this, we’re not the most beautiful and we’re not the best dancers, but there’s something special that they had that nobody else had. I know what my thing is.”

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

“I would tell anyone that she could capture the spirit of what I’m about, that she could find her own confidence in her own way. My aesthetic is not for everyone. … I feel like I’ve been called beautiful and ugly in different measures. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ is very true. You have to remember that. You can’t listen to what people say. It’s like water off a swan’s back.”
