Its an interesting paradox - and one more suited for a Buddhist forum than one of the "star style of Gwyneth" but I really do think that it affects a lot of people.
We know inherently that there is something "wrong" with WANTING AND WANTING MORE AND MORE and how can I look LIKE HER and be LIKE HER and all of that stuff. We know - on some level - that its just OFF to covet such things. [And I'm not only speaking of material things]. Yet we do. And, we do more than most! We come to sites like this that further our desires. Its quite insane and self-defeating...

And we can see all of this and STILL want her damn gorgeous boots!

Somethin' to think about... or DO something about, more likely... if we had the courage..

Awwww! I loved her look in The Talented Mr. Ripley. The stylist did a wonderful job. Such classic pieces. She looked beautiful.

I have subscribed to GOOP twice and still nothing. The newsletters are not going to my junk folder either. This sucks.

I agree with everyone else. While the recipes were great and the hang outs were fine the clothing tips were not well thought out.

She could have done it without the brand names and said things like "Purchase a coat for winter and wear with tights & knee high boots. You can get these items anywhere on the high street".

I think she forgets sometimes that not everyone was brought up with money.

I also wish there was somewhere you could tell her about interesting places to go/eat in London. I want to tell her about my fav resturant. It's not expensive like her suggestions and the food in amazing. I could be a GOOP girl.

I subscribed too and have not received a newsletter yet.

I don't think it is shallow to enjoy looking at beautiful things and wishing for them too. It is not wrong to want a little Gwyneth in our lives--she shines. If you aim for the best for you--you can project the image too. It is a positive way of being. If you are a good person and live the right way, nice things do not make you shallow. They enhance you. We can do it!!

nycgp - we have several threads on consumption and the issues surrounding it in the shop til you drop section as well as personal style. I personally enjoy fashion as a method of expression of different ideas, themes, thoughts and don't really look at it as something purely related to consumption.

Seriously give the GOOP newsletters a miss. Apparently the problems sending them out have been resolved but not only is the name absolutely terrible in a completely unforgivable way, she gives out the most mundane banal advice and people praise it like it's fresh. The turkey ragu recipe? Um, isn't that basic information? Any Brit worth their salt could make a bolognese involving those ingredients. Or if you went to allrecipes.com you'd also find something similar (and better).

And her style tips? Bleurgh. Sorry but if you spend 10 minutes on tfs you'll find better tips and more interesting ideas. I don't find any of her suggestions 'fresh' or even interesting. Oh so you wear a winter coat with tights and boots! Who knew!

And I totally don't buy the argument that she comes from money and is clueless. Sorry but the patronizing act is totally staged for PR. There are a lot of people who come from more money than she does and have better taste, style and sense. If anything, I think she's kind of passe in this regard because the 'trendy' (if you want to call it that) thing to do would be to mix high street and fashion, mention high end hotels and cheaper 'cool' finds (like the Hoxten Hotel), etc.

That said, re: The Talented Mr. Ripley. One of the best styled films ever. Not just in terms of the clothing either though that is superb. She's absolutely lovely in that film and totally embodies that sort of time period and person. Golden hair, golden skin, and fab fab 50's looks. I also love the Tod's campaigns as well.

phew. sorry this post seems like a total rant against her. I don't hate her or anything I just think people give her way too much credit

I just watched the fourth episode of her food show--"Spain--On the Road Again" with Mario Batali. They were in the Basque country. It was very refreshing to see her sightseeing and relaxing. Gwyneth and the actress Claudia Bassols went to the Caudalie spa at their hotel for beauty treatments. Gwyneth mentioned that she is learning how to take some time for herself because she wants to spend every moment with her children.

I really wish Gwen would play Grace Kelly on the big screen. She would be perfect. And I'm sure it would be a hit.
