A very old piece- before Chanel!!
From People.com

Karl Lagerfeld: An Intense German Who Leads Paris Fashion's 'left Wing'

People Magazine May 05, 1975 -In the vicinity of the Sorbonne, if not actually inside its musty halls, young, well-heeled Parisiennes treat fashion like politics. Wishing to be both radical and chic, they rank such established haute couture names as Dior and Cardin on the far right, while on the left are their favorites: Sonia Rykiel, Dorothée bis—and Karl Lagerfeld of the House of Chloë.

"Lagerfeld is definitely the leader of the left-wing designers," explains Monaco's 18-year-old Princess Caroline, currently a student at the Political Science Institute. When not wearing jeans, she likes to adorn herself with Lagerfeld creations. "He is," says Caroline, "my favorite."

Karl Lagerfeld is more than just the avant-garde darling of Caroline and her chums. He is one of the most innovative designers today—a man whose clothes, according to Bazaar's senior fashion editor Carrie Donovan, are "the most modern I've ever seen." Women's Wear Daily calls his evening clothes "among the most original in the world." And Vogue included Lagerfeld in its recent "Best Clothes in the World" roundup.

The object of such adoration is, at 36, something of a mystery. The unmarried Lagerfeld strides about in cowboy boots, hides behind dark glasses and beard, and lives alone in a book-cluttered Paris apartment. For all his radical acclaim, Lagerfeld's prices are hardly Left Bank hand-me-down: $600 for a hand-painted crepe de Chine gown. In the U.S. his clothes are carried by such prestige stores as Henri Bendel and Saks, and among his clientele are Jacqueline Onassis and the Empress of Iran.

Lagerfeld may have been German-born, but he has the right Paris pedigree. Raised in a castle outside Hamburg, he came to Paris at age 14, attended public school and dreamed of costume design and art. While still in his teens, he won a design award in the International

Wool Secretariat competition (which had earlier launched Yves St. Laurent) and was hired to work with Balmain and Jean Patou, two of Paris's top houses.

Realizing that the grand days of Paris haute couture were numbered, Lagerfeld decided to adapt a high-fashion approach to ready-to-wear. He soon made a name for himself with such sportswear trends as the layered look. A master with the shears, he can fashion a dress from just two pieces of fabric that then need only to be sewn together. In fact, some of his dresses are so unconstructed they puzzle their wearers; recently Jackie Onassis had to call Lagerfeld to "find out whether this part goes under or over."

Lagerfeld's designs are inspired by anything from '30s movie stars to the tastes of the models he works with. "I'm a sort of vampire, taking the blood of other people," he says. But he draws the line at imitation or nostalgia for its own sake. When he brought his fall collection to New York last week for its first showing here, there were no examples of the Skinny Look revival prophesied by St. Laurent. Instead there were tunics, fluttering sleeves, capes, shawls, layers of silk, scarves, Chinese kimonos and fabrics of surrealistic prints. "My life is based on fantasy," says Lagerfeld. "I don't ask myself questions about what I do or what I am. I go by instinct. I follow my feelings."

I love this, even thirty-some years ago, Karl was still making outrageous statements. But it's interesting to think that at one time he was once considered "left wing".

It's interesting how they describe Lagerfeld as unmarried, that's such a naive and backward statement. Can you imagine that being written in an article nowadays?

^^ That reminds me- I got a copy of the Broadway musical "Coco" which was done in the late 60s I suppose- and one of the lines is "Dior isn't shy- he expects all his skirts way up high..."! As if it was assumed that Dior would want to see a lot of a woman's leg ...right...

Pretty nice things! And, a normal, sane person might actually be able to go out and buy them!! As much as I lust over all things Chanel, it's kind of like loving the Concord- beautiful, but Zero chance you will ever own one...

I guess the Concords are all in museums now anyway...my favorite airplane of all time!!

Because I will collect every piece of information relating to Karl's houses...

From nytimes.com
Quote:
Alexis Mabille's show was set in Karl Lagerfeld's former mansion on Rue de l'Universite, a baroque space gilded to within an inch of its life. The out-of-touch, precious atmosphere seemed to echo some of Mabille's haute bourgeois efforts.

^^ Wow! Wouldn't you like to have some former mansions...not to be confused with your current mansions, of course...
