WWD.com 2/3/09SEAT YOURSELF: Karl Lagerfeld was the man of the hour Friday night at Les Arts Decoratifs, where he was feted as “creator” of the year by the home decoration fair Maison Objet. Marianne Faithfull said she and Lagerfeld share the same taste in furniture — the antique kind. “I collect 18th-century Irish furniture,” she said. The singer’s next stop is the Chanel studio to get clothes for her upcoming tour in the U.S. Her ideal outfit: “Jeans with a beautiful Chanel shirt and jacket.” As Lagerfeld embraced the likes of Betty Catroux, Vahina Giocante and Chantal Thomass, Nino Cerruti talked about his move from fashion to furniture having recently bought an Italian design company. “One thing is on the body, the other thing is around the body,” he shrugged, wearing one of his signature peak-lapel, single-breasted jackets. Lagerfeld, meanwhile, said he’s headed to Brussels next week to testify before Neelie Kroes, the European competition commissioner who has already met with the likes of Bernard Arnault and Mick Jagger on creating a fair and free business environment on the Continent.

A sign of the financial times or a genuine, but previously well-hidden, designer love for the world’s bestselling toy? Whatever the motivations behind fashion’s current infatuation, there’s no denying that Barbie – or Barbara Millicent Roberts as she’s known to her more ardent fans – has paid her way into this month’s international collections. New York sets the standard next week with parent company Mattel co-sponsoring the event. Expect a life-size Barbie fashion show including pink (naturally) pumps by Christian Louboutin and a $15,000 Barbie wedding dress by Vera Wang. Next stop, London Fashion Week, where designers Roksanda Ilincic and Danielle Scutt have created outfits for 50 Barbie dolls in return for show sponsorship. But the icing on the sparkly, tiara-topped cake must surely be Paris, where the high priest of fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, has photographed her in a Lagerfeld-designed outfit to match a suspiciously Karl-like Ken. Those going to Paris on March 5 can see Lagerfeld’s Barbie shots at Colette, Rue Saint-Honoré. The rest of us will have to be content with trawling our wardrobes for anything pink, safe in the knowledge that it will surely remain in vogue come autumn.
