I think the black outfit is better on the whole but the detail on the white dress is just exquisite. Her skin looks wrinkly though..

It's for Melbourne Cup. Traditionally the women wear all sorts of headwear, hats, fascinators and the like. Headwear like what Kate is wearing is pretty popular at the various events held for Melbourne Cup.
