I disagree about asians wanting to be white because it makes them seem more upper class. Most of the asians I know want to be pale because they want to look more caucasian -- just like how they want bigger eyes with the double eyelid, just like how they want a sharper nose. Places like Hong Kong and Tokyo and Seoul are not underdeveloped countries. These are very advanced cities and alot of them are educated and work in tertiary industries.

But you're right, the people on this board do tend to be worldly and educated and I'm not trying to insult them with my comments. I'm just trying to give people an understanding of the type of mindset that exists in Asia. I'm not one of those Asian girls who wants to look white or marry a caucasian man because he's rich or for a green card. Yet, I do have my own standards of beauty which just so happens to be the same as the general Asian mindset. This doesn't mean I'm going to bleach my skin though cause I would never do that. Just means I find most Asian people unattractive. Which is just a preference. Just like how some caucasian men find asian women more attractive than caucasian women, I just happen to find most asian women really unattractive -- Katie Leung one of them -- and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
I understand what you're trying to say but your response is vague. I'm finding it hard to comprehend and on some parts I strongly disagree. I think we all just need to get used to the fact that beauty comes and all shapes and sizes and accept the way other people look. I am so baffled at the fact that you don't accept your race as an attractive race. If anything I would think that you would be proud to find some - if not the majority- of your race attractive. I think just in general, as a whole, we should just accept people as well.. people. And find beuaty within the person themself, no matter how fair, dark, thin, or thick they may or may not be. Personally, I find beauty within all races, cultures, ethnic backrounds, etc. And find the asian population as a whole to be very attractive. You're more than titled to have your opinion and this is not an oppostion just my opinion as well. So please do not take offense.

But that doesn't mean that I would never date a black guy or a Native American guy, or even a dark haired white guy. It just means that it is not exactly what I am looking for, but who knows? Katie Leung is, to me, one of the most adorable girls on the planet, right now. So she is not your cup of tea? Just don't write off your whole race about it. Katie is only eighteen, has done only one movie, and still has a long way to go before we can write her off as one thing or another. Who knows what her future holds?
I completely agree.

Lets get back to discussing Kate Leung, not asians and caucasians!!

I think shes very pretty in the GOF premiere..the Matthew Williamson dress suited her a lot! I hope she really is as sweet as she looks though..maybe I should have auditioned for the role..who knows what would have happened! :p

The Asian community could really do with some solidarity. I just read comments on other boards saying the actress from "Lost" being an ugly Korean woman and she shouldn't have been chosen to "represent" Koreans on TV. Of course, criticism is always going to be when you're an actress. But I read far more negative comments than good.

But...back to Katie. I hope her roles don't end with HP. I'm looking forward to the movie.

She looks so cute in this picture. From the Veritaserum.com site.

I think I know why I am warming up to her. She is not bombshell pretty, but she is girl-next-door pretty. She seems approachable and warm. She doesn't seem intimidating. Can't wait to see HP!!

Yes beauty does come in all shapes and sizes and forms but you also have to remember that this is a form where people talk about how ugly people are all the time. Fashion and modeling and celebrities are all about shallowness and judging people from their appearence. In fact, I remember reading someone post somewhere that "skinny is always better" which technically can be prejudice against those who are bigger. Yet no one brought her/him up on that comment despite the fact that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Also, someone's race is just appearence. It doesn't make who they are as a person so if I don't find Asians physically attractive, what's wrong with that? Isn't that the same as how some men don't find women who are a size 20 attractive? I agree that beauty comes within different races and cultures but I don't really understand why what I said in the first place is so controversial. Also for the record, I am very proud of my race. I'm proud of being Chinese but I'm not proud of being Chinese cause of the way we look. That's just silly. I'm proud to be Chinese for other reasons.

Buuut, as vintage_princess said -- back to Katie!

I could write a book about this whole thing but in my opinion the bottom line is: the reason why a lot of asians are prejudiced against their physical features is cultural. On one hand you have your native culture's preception of what is beautiful but once you step outside you're bombarded by western ideals. Basically there's a culture clash that leaves people feeling confused at what their ideal should be since the two are so different. Unfortunately people seem to be siding more with the western ideal and it saddens me to hear about the rise in women undergoing plastic surgery to achieve that ideal. Hopefully they'll come out of this mindset soon and say, "To hell with this! I'm beautiful the way I am and I don't need to conform to another culture's standard of beauty!"Back on topic Katie's style could use a little work but she's cute. I wonder how good her acting is...

Wow, this girl is pretty now - but she looks like she'll be really stunning the older she gets...

And I like that she looks good natural and with makeup... as for the prom dress, that's too bad, but she's young.. I can't wait to see more outfits from her!

Wow...just found out about this girl for the first time. I've been totally tuned out of the Hollywood loop lately, don't even know what movies are coming out in the coming holiday season.

That said, I don't think this girl is particularly striking looks-wise and her fashion sense is, like others before me have said, still kind of undefined but that's natural given her age...I think she dresses with more flair than most girls her age, definitely better than the average HK or ABC/BBC/CBC/etc. girl. But man, I dunno...it's just something about her, looking at these pics, she seems to have some kind of charisma and youthful vitality that just makes it hard for me to take my eyes off her (no pedo). Like one of those people who just naturally draws others' attention...it'll be interesting to see how her acting career develops beyond the Harry Potter films, and now I actually kinda want to see this movie just to see how she does in it.

i completely agree. and with the whole asian girls judging other asian girls to an extreme, it is cultural, but then again the same can be said for any other ethnicity/race. we (now i'm speaking on behalf of koreans) follow trends and pop culture so much so that a lot of times we fail to appreciate that which is beautiful but not extravagantly beautiful.

I think it's also plain old jealousy and competitiveness. You see a lot of this in minorities, where they're really trying to cut down others of their ethnicity b/c they feel like there's only so much room at the top for minority stars or minority beauty role models, and the sense of jealousy is probably heightened by the fact that Harry Potter is a HUGE movie and she is very young. But I think that honestly, people should be happy that a minority is onscreen, even if its not themselves. Also, ALL of the kids in HP won the audition while being young regular kids and not professional actors before--why focus attention on the minority among them? Anyway, she seems like a pretty good representative for a minority group, so people should be happy, right? She's poised and classy (in addition to being pretty and intelligent) in interviews and photo opps...would you rather have an over-the-top, drunken, plastic-surgeried beyond belief Asian Paris Hilton in front of tons of impressionable kids?
