Today, Cole Haan announced a collaboration with tennis ace Maria Sharapova for its new fashion-and-sports line, Cole Haan Sporting. The spring 2009 line is scheduled to arrive in stores next February with Ms. Sharapova as the line’s spokesmodel.
The Sporting line, which will include 40 casual styles for women and 30 for men, will carry ballet-style Mary Janes, elevated wedges and sandals in fuschia, orange and cobra for women and boat shoes and lace-ups for men in bold and neutral shades. Prices will range from $115 to $200. Between the colors, styling and Ms. Sharapova’s association, the line is meant to appeal to a young, active and fashion-conscious consumer.
Sporting’s shoes will incorporate Flywire, a weaving technology first seen at the Beijing Summer Olympics that creates strong but lightweight shoes, while Sporting handbags will be made from Bionic Yarn, a textile spun from recycled glass and plastics. In 2006, Cole Haan launched the “Air Collection,” which used Nike technology in both dress and casual shoes. (Nike is the parent company of Cole Haan.) The Air Collection provides around 25% of Cole Haan’s total sales, CEO Jim Seuss says, but did not disclose sales figures.
Next fall, Ms. Sharapova will segue into a design consultant for the line. Ms. Sharapova, 21 years old, has worked with Nike since she was 10 years old, she says. The line will represent her lifestyle. “I’m not coming into the company to make the Maria pump,” she says. “I’m there to add that really young touch and flavor to it.”
“Mixing fashion and sport is an important trend that we see now,” Cole Haan CEO Jim Seuss says. For the fiscal year 2008, Nike’s “other business” global revenues, which includes results from Converse, Hurley and Cole Haan, among others, increased 15% to $2.6 billion, according to SEC filings. – Elva Ramirez
