There are many intriguing aspects of Ashley Olsen—like how she’s avoided the dreaded “child actor” behavioral curse while keeping her eyebrows perfectly shaped, for example. We are particularly interested in how she takes the simplest pieces of clothing and makes them look anything but basic. While we don’t have access to the Parisian thrift stores she favors or the latest Olsen-sister-designed line (Elizabeth and James) at our disposal, we’ve pieced together an Ashley-inspired outfit for today’s What Would She Wear.



1. Urban Outfitters Full Tilt Sunglasses, $18, urbanoutfitters.com
The gold-rimmed frames, smoke-colored lenses, and 80’s-influenced shape of these slightly futuristic shades look like something the Tom Ford-wearing Olsen would pick. Their overall vibe is familiar yet new, much like Ashley’s personal style.

2. Topshop Tablecloth Scarf, $24.50, topshop.com
Scarves are a wardrobe staple for Ms. Olsen. While she wrapped McQueen’s skull print around her neck last fall, we think she just might have nabbed Balenciaga’s ethnic print version this year. According to our research, the Balenciagas are ranging from $1300 to $5700 (yikes), so if your budget looks like ours, perhaps this red check, hounds tooth, and tassel Topshop number is a suitable swap?

3. Shelly Steffee Cowl Top, $135, refinery29shops.com
She may prefer neutral colors but Olsen’s picks are never bland. The mushroom color of this low, cowl-style top would be a natural selection for the stylish mogul. It has a sheer quality like the tees from her line The Row and the graceful draping of the neck is appealing too.

4. Delia’s Olivia Low-rise Straight Pants, $39.50, delias.com
When you’re as tiny as this one, a slim-fit pant is a smart choice, proportion-wise. Olsen relies on fitted black trousers for erranding around LA, and these straight leg pant seem quite up her alley. Hemmed to the ankle, they’re perfect for showing off a serious pair of gladiator, high-heeled sandals or open-toed, lace-up boots!

5. Banana Republic Enamel Bangle, $32, bananarepublic.com
Mary Kate may load up her fingers with rings, but we think this Hermes-style bangle from Banana is more in keeping with the classic jewelry Ashley wears. The bracelet is available in black, as shown, or in cream.

6. Balenciaga Open Toe Lace Up Leather Boots, $4175, balenciaga.com
It wouldn’t be a true Olsen story without one fashion-forward item; hence these unusual open-toe boots from design master Nicolas Ghesquiere of Balenciaga. As a couture devotee—Nicolas loaned her a dress from the Fall 07 collection for her recent 21st birthday party—Ashley would see the inherent design appeal of these statement shoes.
