Michelle Obama’s Latest Gucci Dress May Have an Underlying Message

It’s the first time she’s worn a non-American designer to the Kennedy Center Honors.

Quote:
As the Obamas’ time in the White House draws to a close, all eyes are narrowing in on the last few official events the President and First Lady will attend. Last night was their final Kennedy Center Honors, and while Michelle Obama always commands attention for her sartorial choices, her pink-and-green custom Gucci gown stuck out for a special reason. As The New York Times’s Vanessa Friedman pointed out, it was the first time Obama wore a non-American designer to the ceremony. Her choice coincided with yesterday’s announcement from Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi that he would be resigning after voters decided against his plans for constitutional reform.

This is only the second time the First Lady has worn Gucci, with the first being a map dress she wore for a September taping of Ellen. Whether or not she chose the gown as an act of support for Mr. Renzi is ultimately up for debate, but as Friedman points out, the First Lady’s fashion choices are rarely just coincidence. Vanity Fair has reached out to Gucci for comment.

For the Obamas’ final state dinner in October, where Renzi and his wife Agnese Landini were the evening’s guests of honor, Obama chose a chain mail, rose-gold Versace gown. As her stylist Meredith Koop told Harper’s Bazaar that same month, “We always take into account where we are going and that country’s cultural norms. The goal is to pay tribute to each place we visit [while] never losing the spirit of the United States.”

Obama’s presence in American fashion has been increasingly felt over the past eight years. From her support of young, rising designers like Jason Wu and Brandon Maxwell to her emphasis on fashion education, it’s no secret that the First Lady sees the value in the industry. Her willingness to branch out and wear more foreign designers could be as much a show of diplomacy as it is an attempt to counteract President-elect Donald Trump’s less-than-tactful foreign-policy approach. Or, as she said herself back in 2011, because “there are a lot of other designers that have cute stuff, too.”

Michelle Obama’s Navy-Blue Dress Was a Subtle Nod to Solidarity

The Obama family was color coordinated for the president’s farewell speech.

Michelle Obama’s approach to fashion has been lauded over her eight years in the White House. She championed education for those hoping to get into the industry and made a point of supporting young, up-and-coming designers. Her work came full circle last night during President Obama’s farewell speech, where she wore a lace dress by Jason Wu, whom she also chose to design both of her inaugural ball gowns in 2009 and 2013. The navy blue made a subtle statement, as both the president and Malia Obama, who wore a dress by Cinq à Sept, joined her in wearing the same color.

Obama gave a nod to the First Lady’s consistently good taste in his speech, saying, “You took on a role you didn’t ask for and you made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor.” During her husband’s two terms, Michelle Obama has given her fashion sense a role of its own, honoring other countries by wearing their designers and catapulting young talent into successful careers. She wore Italian label Gucci after the resignation of Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi and put designers like Jason Wu and Brandon Maxwell on to the fashion map.

Wu, who was born in Taiwan, raised in Canada, and now lives in New York, was a relative unknown when the First Lady wore his dress to the first inaugural ball. In 2013, the same year Mrs. Obama chose another one of his gowns to wear for the second inaugural ball, Wu told the New York Times, “She is a first lady who looks great and embraces fashion as part of her message. When she first wore my dress, the world took notice. It is easy to have a first fairy tale moment. Her choice four years later was a real testament about how our relationship has lasted and how she has matured into the role—a certain consistency that was almost unexpected.”

Michelle Obama’s approach to fashion, one where she took chances on young talent and supported them throughout their burgeoning careers, was echoed in her husband’s speech on January 10, as he encouraged a united and welcoming front, regardless of the nation’s challenges or differences. “Because for all our outward differences, we all share the same proud title: Citizen,” POTUS said.

The family’s choice of wearing dark blue signaled solidarity going forward, as the Obamas leave the White House and Donald Trump moves in. At times, the navy appeared so dark it seemed almost black, as if the speech were a somber occasion (it was, after all, Obama’s farewell). The family appeared as one, and, as always, the First Lady showcased her now-iconic style.

I love her outfit in the second picture, where they're leaving the white house. Does anyone know who makes those boots?

I love her, her personality is great. Her style was also impeccable, I love how she wore J Crew during Obama's presidency. I am a huge J Crew fan obviously. I watched a clip from Ellen's tv show (in the US) where she went shopping at CVS in preparation for her husband's exit from the White House. It was so well done and funny! I suggest looking it up on YouTube if anyone's interested.

She's still got it, and most likely always will!! The monochrome madness, playing with vibrant colours which elevates her skintone, and that attitude.

Barack and Michelle Obama Are Casually Exploring Italy at the Moment

While Malia Obama is spending her gap year interning in New York, her parents Barack and Michelle Obama are exploring the historic sights and culinary wonders of Italy.

Earlier this month, Barack was the keynote speaker at the Seeds & Chips Global Food Innovation Summit in Milan, and it seems that since his address, the former president and first lady have been are enjoying being normal tourists in the picturesque Italian countryside. The Obamas have been photographed out and about together in Siena, Tuscany. Separately, Michelle was recently spotted exploring the town of Montalcino in Tuscany solo in a pink, one-shouldered top, and Cutler & Gross sunglasses, while the former president seems to be setting aside some time to work on his golf game.

Of course, this Mediterranean getaway is hardly the first for the Obamas. Soon after the two departed the White House, they vacationed on Sir Richard Branson's private island resort in the British Virgin Islands, where they were doing everything from long walks on the beach to kitesurfing. Barack visited Marlon Brando's private island in French Polynesia soon after.

Next on the itinerary? The retired president will reportedly join German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin Thursday as part of his new foundation's efforts to empower youth to create change.

Michelle Obama Debuts a New Off-Duty Look in Italy

On holiday in Montalcino, Italy, Michelle Obama stepped out in a bright vacation look over the weekend. The former First Lady chose a pink one-shoulder top and distressed denim to enjoy an alfresco meal with friends, which felt worlds away from the structured dresses she wore while her husband was in office—though no less chic.

Smartly, Obama played with proportions. Her Teija blouse was a tad oversize, but tailored in all the right places with soft ruching at the bust and shoulder. She kept the look casual down to her cropped white jeans, which played off the pink-and-white pinstripes up top. Simple flat sandals and a Jimmy Choo cross-body bag in the same shade tied it all together, while metal bangles, oversize Jennifer Fisher hoops, and tinted Morgenthal Frederics sunglasses oozed off-duty vibes—molta bella.
