BECKHAMS TOLD TO GET DRESSED FOR SUCCESS
WHEN the Beckhams posed for America’s W magazine they hoped the pictures would sizzle with sexual desire. The provocative exposure was designed to catapult them to overnight fame in their new country, securing a place among Hollywood’s hottest couples. Instead, the snaps – the first in a series of gaffes and setbacks since they arrived – have led the US fashion elite to dub the couple “trailer trash”. Designer Jessie Cobb said the controversial, suggestive photos were “an exercise in tackiness”. He said: “They are vulgar not artistic, and crass not creative. If they were looking to make a bold statement on arrival here, they succeeded for all the wrong reasons. “The photo where Victoria is spreadeagled across the bonnet of a car and another in which she and husband David are near naked in what appears to be a cheap motel room simply reek of trashiness. “In other photos, David appears camp and effete, while Victoria looks like she’s just crawled out of the cheapest trailer in the park. “Instead of appearing like the class double act they clearly believe themselves to be, they actually look more like a couple of participants on the Jerry Springer show. “America is actually broadly conservative in its reaction to stuff like this. I think the W photos hardly constitute an entrance with style kudos or even street cred. “Victoria, especially, needs to redeem herself fast if she’s to be taken seriously here as a designer. This was a cheap publicity stunt.” And while Beckham’s popularity sold an incredible 250,000 replica shirts in less than three days, bringing him an $8million (£4million) bonus, it didn’t take long for Posh to upset fans. She insisted the Galaxy club store shut to allow her to do some private shopping less than an hour after Friday’s red-carpet and ticker-tape reception. As she bought team souvenirs for the couple’s three sons, officials barred all entrances and told scores of queuing fans they would have to wait to buy $80 (£40) new-look Galaxy shirts. One supporter, Rick Garcia, 35, fumed: “Almost 4,000 of us took the day off work to welcome our new hero. Doesn’t she realise we’re queuing to hand over money that will end up in her hubby’s bank account? She could have chosen any time to browse for gifts but to do it now is insulting.” Then as Beckham remained inside the Home Depot Stadium patiently signing autographs, Posh brushed past fans outside the club shop without a word, climbed into a chauffeur-driven black Lexus LX470 and returned to their $22million (£11million) Beverly Hills mansion. While Beckham, 32, has been welcomed as America’s soccer messiah, Posh, 33, has been blasted by US critics for being “unsmiling and unfriendly”. Even a bid to show her softer side by telling Jay Leno, host of The Tonight Show, that she would like a daughter has not helped. Chelsea Handler, who hosts TV show Chelsea Lately, said yesterday: “She comes across as a totally ridiculous person. David is hot. He should get rid of her and find himself a hot female.” Meanwhile, Beckham’s $250million (£125million) five-year contract, which is laden with perks, is already causing disquiet among team-mates, at least three of whom are on the minimum salary of $17,700 (£8,850) a year. One, 24-year-old centre back Kyle Veris, who shares a three-bedroomed apartment in Redondo Beach with two other Galaxy players, said: “We all pretty much struggle from pay cheque to pay cheque. “I still have to ask my mom and dad for help. It’s hard but I’m trying to look past the money issue and just cherish being able to play with David Beckham and hope that eventually I get a better salary.” And in an interview to be published in today’s Los Angeles Times, Posh risks making herself even more unpopular by attacking Hollywood’s style icons. She haughtily declares: “They dress down quite a lot here, don’t they? It seems to be in keeping to go to Starbucks in tracksuit bottoms and Ugg boots. I have one pair of those for non-photographic opportunities only. Underground car parks are fine but aside from that, no. “I get quite bored with the way people look the same all the time, with the same makeup and the same outfit and the same hair. I like to change things around quite a bit.” Victoria also showed reporters round the family mansion, once owned by Meg Ryan. Her walk-in closet has a leather floor, a computer to keep track of her extensive wardrobe and a mounted camera to give her a 360-degree scan of whatever outfit she’s wearing. She says of the stunning property: “I didn’t want anything too big and ostentatious.” http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/135 ... or-success
