Women in Politics
![]() Hillary Rodham Clinton During the 1992 presidential campaign, Hillary Rodham Clinton observed, "Our lives are a mixture of different roles. Most of us are doing the best we can to find whatever the right balance is . . . For me, that balance is family, work, and service." Hillary Diane Rodham, Dorothy and Hugh Rodham's first child, was born on October 26, 1947. Two brothers, Hugh and Tony, soon followed. Hillary's childhood in Park Ridge, Illinois, was happy and disciplined. She loved sports and her church, and was a member of the National Honor Society, and a student leader. Her parents encouraged her to study hard and to pursue any career that interested her. from http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/firstladies/hc42.html Whether the United States or China, or Europe, a lot of people think that she is a legend, and bless her success ![]() |

Just a reminder early on, to keep this thread on the topic of her style. Any comments regarding politics, past or present, will be deleted.
I actually think it's good to have a thread on political women's style. I think it's hard for a lot of women in politics in America to dress in a way that people think is appropriate for the job, but also is up to date and current. I think a lot of what Hillary and Nancy Pelosi wears is great. I would prefer it to be more modern but hey, what can you do |

^ Great post, Meg.
I, too, would love to see more threads on women in politics (and men in politics, for that matter - Obama always looks very sharp). Nancy Pelosi always looks nice, I must agree. To me, though, Clinton has always needed just a little something extra. But she has worn some spectacular coats. |

I agree Erin, a love political men's sartorial style, well some of them anyway. Plus I think they can get away with more.
I agree Clinton has always needed that little something extra but I feel like she's been up-ing her game a bit more recently on the trail. Like the last picture posted. She's also been wearing some scarves with nehru collars. I really wish we knew what the thinking was for her stylist. I know there are political advisors who tell candidates which colors to wear (for example, wearing a red tie with a blue shirt conveys power. Next time you see a politico making a speech see if he's wearing that color combo) so I really would like to know what they think when they dress her. |

She has so much class and dignity. No matter what anyone says. She's really dignified and proper.

Anna Wintour wrote an editor's letter of disappointment a couple issues ago because she had approached Hillary to do a spread for them but Hil declined. Anna said it is unacceptable that a woman cannot look like a woman just because she is political or celebrate that and I agree. Hillary ultimately had to turn it down because inevitably the media would turn it into a big issue about her priorities, which I'm not surprised by since there has been so much misogyny toward her...
I actually think her style has been much improved on this campaign...like when she wore the turquoise jewelry for the one debate, she looked great. And she always looks feminine while being powerful. I also think Michelle Obama sticks out as well for her class and elegance. |

yes Michelle Obama is another great example of a political woman who dresses well. She dresses quite modern as well which I enjoy. I did read that open letter to Hillary (mostly because it's the first issue of Vogue that i've bought in eons) and whatever reason for not doing it, I agree with Wintour's point that women in politics should dress more feminine. But....it's a complicated issue that is not meant for this thread.
