That trailer looks so good and the original songs sound great. Carey and Joel look like they give the best performances.

It was rather dull. Luhrmann isn't everyone's taste but thinks outside the box and doesn't do anything by half measures. I'm really interested to see what he does with Gatsby.
Totally agree. As amazing as Gatsby is, there's not much in terms of action of plot - not much "happens". I feel like it's just one of those novels that is so difficult to adapt to film because it's brilliance can only really be captured through the medium of language. What this adaptation is offering is spectacle, which I feel like it will deliver. It's gonna be really interesting to see the story modernized through familiar modern faces and through it's contemporary soundtrack/score, yet still set in the 20's. Either way, I'm super excited to see it and feel like I'll love it no matter what!

The soundtrack playlist seems like it'll be pretty epic. I love the use of The Turtles, Happy Together, in the first trailer. To be honest though I'm still feeling a bit iffy about the film, I'm really worried that it's all going to be about celebrating the wealth of the upper-classes and not exposing the shallowness of those with money. I go back and forth from looking forward to this film to not really looking forward to it. I still have my reservations about Baz, while I think he can create colorful and cinematic films, I don't always think he can create films of substance. That said, I'm still willing to give his adaptation of Gatsby a chance, I hope he can prove me wrong.

I doubt that's the case. The Great Gatsby as a novel doesn't celebrate wealth or extravagance. If it did, Gatsby, Daisy etc. would all be happy, which obviously, they aren't, and that much is apparent to anyone who can watch the movie and follow the plot. They have it all in that sense (which I think Baz is showing in an extravagant way with the rich visuals) but there's an emotional core missing.

I think that Baz can create a film of substance, but he often changes the definition of "substance". For example in his Romeo + Juliet style = substance. The pop culture references and music video editing was a statement about how in his own day Shakespeare wasn't considered "high culture" in the least, rather it was popular entertainment of the day, rather like the MTV style was the popular entertainment of the 1990's. I think he's attempting something similar here. For example in this article Baz speaks about why he has Jay Z producing the soundtrack:
Quote:
"Fitzgerald was a pioneer, famed and controversial for using the then-new and explosive sound called jazz in his novels and short stories - not just as decoration, but to actively tell story using the immediacy of pop culture. He coined the phrase 'the Jazz Age,'" Luhrmann said. "So, the question for me in approaching 'Gatsby' was how to elicit from our audience the same level of excitement and pop-cultural immediacy toward the world that Fitzgerald did for his audience? And in our age, the energy of jazz is caught in the energy of hip-hop.
Source

Here is another great interview with Baz about his approach to the material in general and what he's trying to convey with this film

Remember also that trailers are made to sell movies to general audiences- not literature buffs! They're not going to show the subtle moments. They're going to show the style.

I love that they have Emeli Sande covering Beyonce and Beyonce covering Amy Winehouse

Can't wait for Lana's song.. I was a bit underwhelmed with Florence's track, the piece from the trailer was great but the full song didn't do anything to me

I agree with this, but yes, I too am super excited despite thinking it'll be hard to do a "faithful" adaptation
