I'm thinking of watching Palme but I'm always so saddened by it. How can one well placed shot destroy everything?

Never Let Me Go - very disturbing. I watch a lot of horror films, but this film actually bothered me. The images during the donor period were so sad. And the film is just bleak, bleak, bleak - very few if any "uplifting" moments in the narrative. Everything is tinged with sadness and imminent mortality and thwarted love. Nothing works out well. Ugh. Very existential, though, and the messages were important to put out there in a society that is becoming evermore technologically and medically advanced. Let's hope those advances don't trump our humanity or we could find ourselves living out the nightmare of this film. I think the "completion" of Knightley's character in the surgery room was totally horrific.

Aside from the bleak narrative, however, the performances are wonderful, nuanced and sensitive - from all the leads: Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield. The art direction (sets, costumes) and cinematography are also beautiful in a wistful and, yes, sometimes bleak way.

Worth watching but pick a time when you're not already in sad state.

Cabin in the Woods - it was good. I get the genre busting etc., and some of the effects were great, for example, the "purge". But this film was hyped, a lot! Too much, perhaps. And for me, it didn't quite live up to that hype. I think Shaun of the Dead was a smarter and better genre exercise; it was focused, it was funny, but it was even scary occasionally. I didn't feel that any of this film was frightening. It was, quite literally, a joke. Who is the joke on, I guess, is the question; is it a commentary on people who watch horror films? Who make them? On secular society? On reality TV? All of those? Maybe debating those things is where the fun really starts.
