The Killer Inside Me - well... Casey Affleck's acting is good, as is the washed out cinematography. But the film itself, particularly the narrative, is lacking in any redeeming value; the brutality is unrelenting when it comes (much has been made of this in the press and reviews), and it's enough to leave a sour taste in my mouth. Too bad: I've liked some of Winterbottom's other work (24 Hour Party People and A Mighty Heart, for example).

The Deep Blue Sea - I can appreciate why Rachel Weisz is now receiving plaudits for this. So understated when it could have been so melodramatic. But wow, this film is just so awfully awfully British! All that restraint and repression!

Friends With Kids - Moderately amusing in places but to be honest most of the characters in this are so self-centred and unpleasant that it's hard to go along with it.

The Master - Saw this on a really poor quality cinema screen which slightly spoiled my enjoyment (I actually complained afterwards). But I could still appreciate it was beautifully shot with sublime performances. I'm just still trying to get my head around a lot of it.

Take This Watlz- This was billed as a romantic comedy, and it is definitely not that. As a strongly acted, lovely to look at character drama, it's definitely worth seeing though.

^ agree with you lostgirl. Also totally agree with Chaky's take on "Friends with Kids".

Hope Springs - as a study of a stalled marriage I thought this was pretty well done; mainly it's the acting, specifically of Tommy Lee Jones but of Meryl Streep too of course. I even thought Steve Carell was good as the therapist. He played him straight. But a couple of things hold this film back, and both of them are cliches: firstly the initial depiction of the marriage was too cliche, with the man stuck in his newspaper in the morning while the wife cooks, and then in his lazyboy watching golf in the evenings; and secondly, the soundtrack was horrible, with every cliche song you can imagine, culminating with Van Morrison at the end. It was just too predictable and took away from the honesty and drama of the film. But it's still good, for both the acting and for the rare effort of trying to portray an older couple (nearing retirement age) trying to reconnect in an sincere way.

Death at a Funeral (2007)- I really liked this film, it's very typical British humor, so I can see how some people wouldn't like it. It was funny to see Matthew Macfadyen in a character so different from Mr. Darcy.

Almost done watching He's Just Not That into You; it's on TV. I can't get over why/how it's not a better film given the star power. I am toughing it out, but it's just not that good. Maybe with all of the different storylines the result is that none of them are developed sufficiently enough for us to really care about the characters. Not to mention the fact that most of the women seem to be "wronged" in some way. Sigh.

Trishna- Freida Pinto was wonderful in this film, which is a modern retelling of Tess of the d'Urbervilles set in India. While I liked the acting I disliked Trishna's lack of agency for much of the film, she's an incredibly passive character, though that seems to be part of the story. It was an interesting retelling, especially because of the social/gender/class differences between the characters told through Indian society vs an English one. Especially during the last few minutes of the film, it really becomes apparent. Overall, while some parts were difficult for me to relate too as a feminist (especially when seeing Trishna treated so horribly), I enjoyed much of the film.
