Love Actually (2003) - I only watched this because of the excessive usage of turtlenecks and Claudia Schiffer's appearance .

Frances Ha.
It's available for streaming on Netflix. No excuses, everyone must see it. Absolutely amazing.

American Hustle : Christian Bale delivers once again an amazing performance. He really is the best thing in it, he makes it so easy and so convincing. I thought Amy Adams was great. Sometimes I wanted/expected a bit more strenght and greed in her performance but there are moments when you just can't take your eyes out of her. When she delivers, she really does !
Bradley Cooper was very underwhelming, he's getting praised while I think Jeremy Renner is far more impressive in the film. Even Robert De Niro cameo is more impressive than his performance.
As for Jennifer Lawrence, I still don't know what to think of her performance. I still think she looks way too young to play such a part. At times it really looks like she's way traying too hard, to pull a Sharon-Stone-in-Casino kind of performance but it looks very gimmicky. Besides I think she looses and finds back her accent at least 3 times in the film. Yet there're scenes in which she really is stunning and can almost convince me.
The acting is very solid but the plot and the directing are a bit all over the place. What makes David O' Russell directing so interesting in his previous films doesn't work here. There's no depth, it's just too frenetic. The film last 2hours and yet you stay unsatisfied at the end. Also, watching the film I just kept thinking how it was such a big Oscar bait. Almost everything seems to be a request for that golden statute. At the point where it becomes way too obvious. And that really bothered me.

^ Agreed. It was a sloppy film tied with a pretty bow. Great costumes, cast, and soundtrack, but it just BEGS to be rewarded with an Oscar. So tired of these films that fall flat on subsistence all the while trying to do their best Scorsese mimicking. Jlaw did her usual OMG-I'M-YELLING-SO-IT-MEANS-I'M-ACTING performance and will, I'm sure, continue to be praised. Amy Adams was great as usual, but something in the character was missing. I think you're right, Wolkfolk, in that her performance needed more strength and greed. Eh.. it's a whatever~ movie.

@Wolkfolk, I completely agree with your review for American Hustle as far as the acting performances are concerned. Christian Bale's especially is so natural I forget he is even acting. He made the movie for me, along with Amy Adams. I thought Jennifer Lawrence's performance was weaker and more clumsy too compared to the others but I don't think she was given that much to work with. She still had a few good moments here and there.

I think overall the story could have been developed a little more, or at least better put together. I would have liked to have seen the ''who's conning who'' aspect of it played out in a more cohesive way, but overall I still really enjoyed it.... greatly in part to the actors involved who are some my absolute favorite actors working today, and also the hair and wardrobe and 70s setting that I loved.
