The Woods (it was not that great of a movie, but the 60s vibe/styling was so great)

Well... I did enjoy Twelve years a slave a lot. In my opinion, it's one of the most impressive and meaningful films of the year. Not speaking about the plot details here because I'm not going to ruin the fun for those who haven't watched it yet. I believe that the individual style of McQueen (which is quite recognizable by the third movie, it seems to me) and the amazing performance of Chiwetel and Michael (hopefully it will get noticed by the Academy) might be reasons good enough to watch it

Inside Llewyn Davis - fantastic Coens again. I'm probably too young to have caught all the references to the early 60s folk scene, but I get the feeling, as with a lot of Coen movies, that this film will only reveal more layers with repeat viewings.

Blue Is The Warmest Colour - yes I sat in the cinema for the full three hours! They could have chopped at least 20 minutes out and I don't think it would have suffered. But I loved the two lead performances - they conveyed utter realism in their portrayals.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire - It's a touch on the long side and I can understand criticisms that it's a bit of a retread. But the direction seems more assured, the budget was clearly much bigger, there is an excellent supporting cast (Hoffman, Tucci) and of course Jennifer Lawrence is just awesome. I liked the second book the best and this movie does a very good job overall.

This was probably the most unexpectedly great film of the year for me. I'd seen the Danish film 'A Hijacking' which deals with very similar themes so I kinda thought this would be more of the same. But it's very different, with expertly cranked tension and, I'm not a massive Tom Hanks fan, but I thought he was brilliant in this.
