twin peaks is the creepiest TV show I've seen

as for books Naked Lunch and Trainspotting.... i also think that there are few Dostoevsky's books that are disturbing, but i don't really know English titles....

movies...well.... Polanski and Lynch did some amazing movies and most of them are too scary and disturbing like Repulsion....

and i see few people mentioned Lolita. what scares me is that I felt sorry for the pedophile. but than again Kafka's Jozef K was in some serious trouble...

Also, the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was one of the most racist things ever!

House of Leaves for books.

I disagree about Irreversible, it is disturbing yes, but I think it's a good film. Enter the Void was more disturbing to me.

'Salo' for me also. When I saw it in a theater, people were streaming out.

I just watched Cannibal Holocaust because of this thread...That is DEFINITELY the most disturbing movie I've ever watched. D: At first I didn't think it'd be that disturbing, but I was very very wrong. Good thing I watched it during the day

I just read that Salo is praised for really touching on powerful subjects. It is interesting to read that the gag and disgust factor overpowers real messages in films.

Agree it is not a very disturbing one but rather tense, at some point I thought I would be sick and the worst thing is that I was at the end of the row and could not even get out... even though he is cutting his hand, he does it for saving his life which is kind of possitive... usually films that disturb me have negative context... I was e.g. disturbed by Black Swan even though I loved it...

of course Pasolini's film is very disturbing too and I guess that was the reason he got killed which in itself is very disturbing...

well, why make something so disturbing that your messages will be overlooked? when that happens the artist has failed

The Dreamers is a good suggestion Love that movie so much. It's eerie but makes you want to watch it even more.

Oy. 120 Days of Sodom (also called Salo) is definitely disturbing and cringe-inducing. Also Slaughtered Vomit Dolls and some German movie who's name escapes me, but it was a very graphic movie about highly sadistic cannibals. Really uncomfortable to watch.

Books: Justine and 120 Days of Sodom both by Marquis de Sade.

TV shows... The League of Gentlemen. It's comedy, but really twisted, dark and bizarre. It's brilliant, but also very, very sick.
