Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides - all mood no substance. Needless to say, I'm not a Sofia Coppola fan

Memoirs of a Geisha, I just felt like I wasted a few hours watching it.

I know it got a gazillion Oscars (what were they thinking?!) but it is always used as an example of how bad an movie can turn out, no matter how much money you put in it.

I like those films, just for that reason But no, I'm not a fan, and those are not films that make my world. I don't think she's very talented. I don't think she is going to have a career of ten/twenty good films...I haven't seen Marie-Antoinette yet, but if that is the same case, I might start to get a little bit bored...so yes, overrated.

Overrated:

Pride and Prejudice, the Keira Knightley version.

one of my favorite films ... it was perfectly cast and the elements of the film i thought worked harmoniously together. and keira was great in it personally. she had such control of the character. some people might not think so as characters in books may be imagined and interpreted differently.

Tell you what, I haven't read the book :p Shame on me!

It is the best acting Knightley has given (I don't want to offend, but I think she has no talent in acting...she has looks, but that's it). It was a good film to watch on a Sunday evening when nothing to do, but other than that...the hype was too much.

Jackie Brown ; just because it is Tarantino does not mean it is good.
Alien ; thought to be a classic horror film...what?
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ; boring.
Jaws ; see Alien
Sixth Sense ; M. Night Shyamalan is an overrated director by far. This is his best film, and even this isn't any better than mediocre.

What does it mean to be an over rated movie anyway? Some movies are labeled as "so-so" by the critics, yet do really well at the box office: Pirates Two. I guess it just depends.
Garden State- I loved the movie the first time I saw it, so I watched it again and again. Now I can't handle it. There are so many illogical things in it. So many!! My friends love it now, but when I watch it, at certain parts, my mind can't wrap around certain parts: How can you leave a gas station with the pump still in your car?? Huh? Cops can get in major trouble for talking to a person the way he did to Zach's character, especially for someting like speeding. But that soundtrack is pretty awesome..
Lost in Translation- I find it quite boring a lot of the time. I do love the scenes where the audience gets to see the city. I can't imagine having to shoot a film there. I do like The Virgin Suicides better. I think the issue with Sofia's films with me sometimes, is that I see the characters' personalities and issues, but I don't know why they feel that way. It's hard for me to connect with her characters, but I'll watch her movies because the mood and clothes are fun to watch.
I suppose I've got a few more, but I can't remember.
Yes, I hated the second Pirates movie. Yet, I will watch the third the first day it comes out. Shame, shame.

I agree! The Godfather I and II are masterpieces. Excellent and original story, well-written, extremely well-acted (Al Pacino really got shafted by the Academy; he should have won at least once for his wonderful portrayal of Michael Corleone), and gorgeously shot.
The Godfather III was an entirely different story. Still a pretty good movie, just not at the masterful level of the first two. My biggest problem with the third one was the casting Sofia Coppola as his daughter! WTF.

^ I actually really liked "The Departed", but you should check out the HK movie it was based on - "Infernal Affairs," a very, very good movie starring the two biggest actors in HK, Andy Lau and Tony Leung. Both are v. good actors, Tony Leung, especially (he won a Best Actor Award at Cannes in 2000, for "In The Mood For Love"). The story is much more linear and straight-forward. One of my biggest gripes with "The Departed" was the ending. The ending in "Infernal Affairs" is different and exponentially better. It also features a wonderful sequence featuring the beautiful HK landscape.

I think Sofia Coppola's films are overrated. I hated "Lost In Translation" (see the movie that "inspired" it: "In the Mood For Love", which was more atmospheric, well-acted by two veteran thesps, TL and Maggie Cheung, romantic, sensual, and gorgeous to look at). "Virgin Suicides" was blah. "Marie Antoinette" was v. disapointing, but also a very beautiful movie to look at. I LOVED the costumes!

Movies I find really overrated:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hero
House of Flying Daggers

---basically all of the martial arts movies that take themselves too seriously and are pure style at the cost of substance. I hope it doesn't seem like I hate Asian movies because A, I don't (I mentioned I loved "Infernal Affairs" which is a HK movie); B, I love and admire a lot of Asian actors; and C, I AM Asian. But I just thought those three that I listed were terribly pretentious and overrated movies. Trust me, there are way better movies coming out of HK and China.
