I'm guessing this is a really late response, but Tom Cruise is overrated. the vampire movie was not bad, but remember Top gun, vanilla sky, war of the worlds? those were horrible.

I love how this thread was started "for" Tom Cruise. I totally agree. He should've won at least one Oscar so far. He was JUST AWESOME in Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Interview with the Vampire, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, The Last Samurai and Collateral. He never gets enough cred for his acting skills. Shame, because IMO, he's one of the best actors working today.

Interview with the Vampire is a very good movie with him . He plays a "villain" I guess, a vampire for several hundred years. He did the character perfectly and brought this beautiful shinging and seductiveness to the character.

I don't think Tom Cruise is overrated, but I don't think he's underrated either, he's been nominated 3 times for an Oscar and been nominated for the Golden Globes, those were recognitions. Now people talk more about his private life but in my opinion, that is all his own doing. But, yes, he has done good performances, but I wouldn't include Interview With A Vampire as one of those good performances. IMO he made a joke out of Lestat, maybe it was the way Lestat was writen for the movie but I found it disapointing, I didn't see much of Lestat from the book in the movie. Anne Rice said it took her years to be able to write another book with Lestat as narrator after seen the movie. Also I felt he was outshine by the other actors, but then again, maybe it was the way the other characters were writen. If I had to judge him only on that performance I would find him very overrated.

To each their own, but what on Earth makes people think Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are actually talented actors? It doesn't matter to me if people like them, but usually those people do know that they aren't appreciated for their talent, but for their looks. Pitt and Cruise both know it and want it. They don't want to take interesting/risky roles, the most work they'll ever do for a role is working out and getting their hair done. There's nothing wrong in that, but they shouldn't be called actors as they quite clearly are not looking for it.

I actually think Pitt is talented. Cruise isn't, but Pitt has had some awesome roles in Legends of the Fall, Snatch, and Fight Club. Yea, he's done a ton of fluff, but so has Johnny Depp, for example, and I hold him in high regard.

On Ed Norton (also my fave), I don't think he's underrated, I think he's given proper credit. He just isn't appearing in many movies, which is most probably his choice.

Agree on Buscemi and Edward Furlong - awesome actors.

i dont understand how gael garcia is underrated really. he's certainly talented, but also picky with his roles and that's why he's not seen as much as we'd want to, if he'd do everything he's being offered, he'd definitely fit more in the overrated category as everyone thinks he's better than what he actually is. . i love him, but he's capable of some pretty crap performances.

i'd add Tim Roth to the list. i'm not sure if he's been mentioned already but he's amazingly talented and hardly recognized.

I think Tom Cruise is underrated (I know he is very not done right now) His role in Magnolia was amazing. Overall I agree with you, people, I would also like to ad Diego Luna, he was amazing in Y tu mamá también, and Giovanni Ribisi, he is one of my favorites!

Tom Cruise is a decent actor. It's a shame about his public persona.

Gary Oldman
Edward Norton
Evan Rachel Wood

Philip Seymour Hoffman used to be....but not anymore, I suppose.

i agree w/ faust.
brad pitt is a gifted actor, he also happens to be very well-compensated for it.
he is able to slip into all sorts of roles
and often i forget i am watching brad pitt, because his characters rise above his own personal charisma and magnetism...

tim roth is great.
i was a big fan of philip seymour hoffman back before the capote craze (boogie nights, anyone?)
also mark ruffalo.
when i saw will smith in six degrees of separation, i couldn't understand what he was doing with the kind of roles he takes on these days...

Well I think Tom Cruise is not really in the same category as Brad Pitt. The only performance where Pitt was half decent was 12 Monkeys, Fight Club he wasn't too bad either, but that's it. Cruise on the other hand... To say Cruise doesn't want/take risky roles is just ignorant, IMO. Collateral, Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut. Those are all risky movies that not every movie star would be willing to do, especially one with Cruise's status. You don't see Will Smith or Denzel Washington doing anything like that, or Even Tom Hanks. How about Russell Crowe? That's partly why I think Cruise is underrated. Any other actor takes a role like that and it would be considered "risky", Cruise does it, and people don't see it.

Between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, I'd say Tom Cruise showed more talent
