Marcel Reich-Ranicki - Mein Leben (English title: The author of himself)

Quote:
Born into a Jewish family in Poland in 1920, he moved to Berlin as a boy. There he discovered his passion for literature and began a complex affair with German culture. In 1938, his family was deported back to Poland, where German occupation forced him into the Warsaw Ghetto. As a member of the Jewish resistance, a translator for the Jewish Council, and a man who personally experienced the ghetto's inhumane conditions, Reich-Ranicki gained both a bird's-eye and ground-level view of Nazi barbarism. Written with subtlety and intelligence, his account of this episode is among the most compelling and dramatic ever recorded.

Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin

This is such a beautifully written and gorgeous book that I feel like whatever words of praise I could ever think of would do it no justice. It's one of my absolute favourite books I've ever read.

Just finished The Poet by Michael Connelly, which is a good potboiler, uses Edgar Allan Poe quotes as the murderer's signature, and We Need to Talk about Kevin, which is as good as the film if not better because you get so involved with the first person narration and really come to know more about the couple. You get their backstory, before they had kids, and it's so sad how they were torn apart because of that. That impacted me more in the book than in the film, which is more just about Kevin and his mom.

Am now reading Gothic Histories by Clive Bloom and may start The Help.
