Here's an interview with Vibe magazine back in '95.

An interview in Vibe from 1995
Model Chrystele is happy to be nappy. Three years ago she went au naturel after years of doing the chemical thing. "I thought the straight hair was really ugly, and I hated it," she says in her thick French accent. "I think it suits the white girls, but it doesn't suit my hair."
And she was right. In fact, the 22-year-old Chrystele has caused quite a stir in Fashion Land with that hair. Last year, while still a communications student, she tagged along with a friend to an open casting in Paris for a Benetton ad. After getting the job, she went straight to the runway. There she was, in the middle of Paris's fall '94 collections, with only one week of modeling experience under her Afro. "I was feeling like I was from another planet," Chrystele says, laughing. "Everybody wanted to touch me, and I'm, like, `Wow, it's just hair. Calm down!' "
Because of her striking looks, many are quick to assume she's of mixed parentage, but Chrystele is obviously bothered by the suggestion. "It's completely wrong. My parents are both from Caribbean islands. My dad is from Martinique and my mom from Guadeloupe," she huffs. "They're both black, and that's it. I am black girl."

Wow! Is that possible? I mean if both my parents were black, surely I'd be as black as them. Caribbean is not an ethnicity -she must have some mixed blood somewhere down the line? Can anyone clear this up? Thanks for the link ebonbird!

Yes, she probably has some other races in her ancestry, but so do most Black people on this side of the world. She says they are Black, so that's what they must be.

I'm sure she's not lieing or anything but she shouldn't be bothered by that assumption..after all she is (complection wise) almost white and her hair looks like bi racial hair. I'd love to see her parents ..i mean they may be caribbean but I wonder if they are dark complected. I get asked "what I am" on a daily basis and it does get a little annoying ..haha and i can relate to the hair thing because if i wear my hair down people always want to touch it. She may consider herself black but the girl is definately not black.

I'm not going to take the word of a self-expressed expert on that, so, rather, got any good pictures of Ms. Augustin?

I never said I was an expert it's just my opinion. I am allowed an opinion, aren't I? I don't feel that I should have to say IMO every single time I express one. All I was getting at is that I can relate to what she said in the article.

Not very into the topic except I love Christelle, but what does IMO mean? And, by the way, what does ditto mean?

I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping you had some good pictures of her to share.
